Mediation effect of herpes zoster derived by statin use on cardiovascular disease risk.
Conclusions: This study showed that statin use reduced CVD by 10%, but the protective effect of statin use against CVD was mitigated by approximately 10% through the development of HZ caused by statin use. PMID: 32550721 [PubMed - as supplied by publisher]

Vascular Event Risk After Herpes Zoster
We have read the article by Patterson et  al1 published in the April 2019 issue of Mayo Clinic Proceedings. The authors performed an interesting study using propensity score to evaluate the cardiovascular disease risk during the prodromal period and aggregate period of herpes zoster (HZ) infection. The incidence rate calculated according to the time line before and after the index date also provided valuable information on the following cardiovascular risk. Evidence from large population-based studies suggests a transiently increased risk of stroke after HZ.

Acute Cardiovascular Events after Herpes Zoster: A Self-Controlled Case Series Analysis in Vaccinated and Unvaccinated Older Residents of the United States
Conclusions Stroke and MI rates are transiently increased after exposure to herpes zoster. We found no evidence for a role of zoster vaccination in these associations. These findings enhance our understanding of the temporality and magnitude of the association between zoster and acute cardiovascular events.
