Australia faces increased risk of disease from climate change, reports find
A number of recent studies have shown a clear connection between a warming planet and increased health risksAustralia has been warned of the rising threat of dengue fever and heat stroke deaths in the wake of a study that found climate change is aiding the spread of infectious diseases around the world. The report, part-funded by the US National Science Foundation and published in Science, found that climate change is already abetting diseases in wildlife and agriculture, with humans at heightened risk from dengue fever, malaria and cholera. Wealthy countries will do much better at predicting and tackling new disease threa...

Neurologic manifestations of E coli infection-induced hemolytic-uremic syndrome in adults
I commend Weissenborn et al.1 for careful serial neurologic and neuropsychological examination of 42 severely ill adults. I question whether encephalopathy or delirium is the best description. The first of 2 cardinal features of delirium on the Confusion Assessment Method (CAM)2 is acute confusion with fluctuating course. All the observations support sudden onset. The low median age of 43 years makes prior brain disease such as Alzheimer disease and stroke unlikely in most subjects. Figure 2 demonstrates great fluctuation in neuropsychological dysfunction.1 The second CAM cardinal feature is inattention. Twenty-one patient...

Gastrointestinal complications after cardiac surgery: 10‐year experience of a single Australian centre
ConclusionsGI complications after cardiac surgery remain an uncommon but dreadful complication associated with high mortality. Our findings should prompt a high degree of clinical vigilance in order to make an early diagnosis especially in high risk patients. Further studies aiming to identify independent predictors for GI complications after cardiac surgery are warranted.

cDNA cloning of a snake venom metalloproteinase from the eastern diamondback rattlesnake (Crotalus adamanteus), and the expression of its disintegrin domain with anti-platelet effects.
Abstract A 5' truncated snake venom metalloproteinase was identified from a cDNA library constructed from venom glands of an eastern diamondback rattlesnake (Crotalus adamanteus). The 5'-rapid amplification of cDNA ends (RACE) was used to obtain the 1865 bp full-length cDNA sequence of a snake venom metalloproteinase (CamVMPII). CamVMPII encodes an open reading frame of 488 amino acids, which includes a signal peptide, a pro-domain, a metalloproteinase domain, a spacer, and an RGD-disintegrin domain. The predicted amino acid sequence of CamVMPII showed a 91%, 90%, 83%, and 82% sequence homology to the P-II class e...
