Association between socioeconomic status and prognosis after ischemic stroke in South China.
Conclusions: Patients with low income, family caregiver, and no insurance have a poorer prognosis after ischemic stroke that can be partly explained by intermediate variable in the patients' demographic characteristics, cardiovascular disease, behavior lifestyle, and stroke severity. Abbreviations: DALYs: disability-adjusted life years; SES: socioeconomic status; FMC: free medical care; MIUR: medical insurance for urban residents; MIUE: medical insurance for urban employees; NCMS: new rural cooperative medical scheme ; NIHSS: National Institute of Health Stroke Scale ; mRS: modified Rankin scale; OR: odds ratios; CI: confi...

Reversed ophthalmic artery flow following ischemic stroke: a possible predictor of outcomes following carotid artery stenting.
This study provides evidence that CAS is a valid and effective treatment option regardless of whether patients exhibited ROAF or not. Patients without ROAF were significantly more likely to have improved mid-term functional outcomes compared to those with ROAF. In the group without ROAF admission, CRP may play a role in predicting subsequent functional outcomes, whereas admission Barthel Index was a predictor of outcome in the ROAF group. Percutaneous mastoid electrical stimulator alleviates autonomic dysfunction in patients with acute ischemic stroke.
CONCLUSIONS: PMES was a safe, effective, and low-cost therapy to alleviate HRV and could significantly reduce mortality in the early recovery phase after acute ischemic stroke. PMID: 30111262 [PubMed - as supplied by publisher]

Association study of CACNA1C polymorphisms with large artery atherosclerotic stroke in Chinese Han population.
Conclusion The results suggested that there was a potential association between CNCNA1C gene and the risk factor of LAA stroke in Chinese Han population. PMID: 29683785 [PubMed - as supplied by publisher]

Predictors of dependence after MCA ischemic stroke submitted to thrombolysis.
DISCUSSION: .Dependence is an important indicator of the efficacy of stroke care. Besides it was not possible to evaluate rehabilitation, this is the first study on predictors of post-stroke dependence that focus exclusively on patients with first-ever MCA IS submitted to IVT. NIHSS, LAA stroke, in-hospital pneumonia and seizures after discharge were associated with dependence after first-ever MCA IS submitted to IVT. PMID: 29125072 [PubMed - as supplied by publisher]

Relationship of phosphodiesterase 4D (PDE4D) gene polymorphisms with risk of ischemic stroke: a hospital based case-control study.
CONCLUSION: SNP 83 of PDE4D gene may increase the risk for developing IS whereas SNP 87 and SNP45 of PDE4D may not be associated with the risk of IS in the North Indian population. Prospective cohort studies are required to corroborate these findings. PMID: 28562233 [PubMed - as supplied by publisher]

One-year outcomes and secondary prevention in patients after acute minor stroke: results from the China National Stroke Registry.
CONCLUSIONS: Outcomes in individuals in China who had experienced acute minor stroke were unfavorable, underscoring the importance of early, sustained preventive therapy in this patient population. Combination of secondary prevention medication classes was associated with a lower risk of death. PMID: 28476094 [PubMed - as supplied by publisher]

The role of Akt (protein kinase B) and protein kinase C in ischemia-reperfusion injury.
Authors: Zhao EY, Efendizade A, Cai L, Ding Y Abstract Stroke is a leading cause of long-term disability and death in the United States. Currently, tissue plasminogen activator (tPA), is the only Food and Drug Administration-approved treatment for acute ischemic stroke. However, the use of tPA is restricted to a small subset of acute stroke patients due to its limited 3-h therapeutic time window. Given the limited therapeutic options at present and the multi-factorial progression of ischemic stroke, emphasis has been placed on the discovery and use of combination therapies aimed at various molecular targets contrib...

S100β as a biomarker for differential diagnosis of intracerebral hemorrhage and ischemic stroke.
CONCLUSION: S100β could serve as a potential biomarker for differentiating between ICH and IS and predicting short-term functional outcome after ICH. PMID: 27078704 [PubMed - as supplied by publisher]

Antithrombotic therapy for ischaemic stroke patients with AF/RHD in West China daily practice.
CONCLUSION: Our study suggests that overall real-world use of warfarin in IS patients with AF and/or RHD is low before and after admission in West China. Implementation study on this respect should be conducted in this area to improve the daily practice. PMID: 26178783 [PubMed - as supplied by publisher]

A pharmacoeconomic assessment of recombinant tissue plasminogen activator therapy for acute ischemic stroke in a tertiary hospital in China.
Conclusions: Intravenous rt-PA was associated with lower patients' disabilities, fewer in-hospital days, and comparable total costs compared to conservative therapy for the management of AIS. PMID: 25297471 [PubMed - as supplied by publisher]
