Comparison of Morphological Features and Flow Velocity of the Left Atrial Appendage among Patients with Atrial Fibrillation Alone, Transient Ischemic Attack and Cardioembolic Stroke
The left atrial appendage (LAA) is a major source of emboli responsible for cardioembolic stroke (CES). We hypothesized that there could be differences in the morphological and functional features of LAAs among patients with atrial fibrillation (AF) alone, patients with cardioembolic transient ischemic attack (CETIA) and patients with CES. Patients with AF and CETIA/CES were included in either a CETIA group or a CES group. Patients with AF without past histories of stroke were included in an AF/non-CVA group.

Relation of Low-Density Lipoprotein Cholesterol to Ischemic Stroke in Patients With Nonvalvular Atrial Fibrillation
Low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-C) has been demonstrated as an independent risk factor of ischemic stroke, but the association of LDL-C with ischemic stroke in patients with nonvalvular atrial fibrillation (AF) remains uncertain. Usefulness of the MrWALLETS Scoring System to Predict First Diagnosed Atrial Fibrillation in Ischemic Stroke Patients
In this study we searched for echocardiographic parameters associated with first diagnosed AF, to form a scoring system for the identification of AF patients. We examined 571 ischemic stroke patients (72.7 ±13.5 years, 50.6% women), subdivided into 4 groups: documented cause without AF, first diagnosed AF, known paroxysmal AF, and permanent AF. All patients underwent transthoracic echocardiography, brain CT scan, carotid/vertebral ultrasound, and continuous ECG monitoring.

Triggering of Stroke or Atrial Fibrillation by Percutaneous Coronary Intervention
I have read the article entitled “Percutaneous Coronary Intervention as a Trigger for Stroke” by Varmdal et al. 1 with great interest, recently published in journal. Their estimates indicated a substantially increased risk of ischemic stroke during the first 2 days after percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI). Relative risk t hen decreased gradually but stayed elevated for 8 weeks. Increased awareness of this vulnerable period after PCI in clinicians and patients could contribute to earlier detection and treatment for patients suffering a postprocedural stroke 1.

Percutaneous Coronary Intervention as a Trigger for Stroke
This study aimed to quantify the transient change in risk of stroke for up to 12 weeks after PCI. We applied the case-crossover method, using data from the Norwegian Patient Register on all hospitalizations in Norway in the period of 2008 through 2014. The relative risk (RR) of ischemic stroke was highest during the first two days after PCI (RR 17.5, 95% CI 4.2-72.8), and decreased gradually during the following weeks.

Usefulness of Atrial Fibrillation as a Marker for Adverse Cardiovascular Outcomes in Both Primary and Secondary Prevention in Patients with Implantable Cardioverter-Defibrillators
Whether the risk factors for cardiovascular (CV) outcomes are different in primary vs. secondary prevention implantable cardioverter-defibrillator (ICD) patients is unclear. We sought to identify predictors of CV outcomes in ICD recipients for primary (G1) vs. secondary prevention (G2). Consecutive patients who had ICD implanted during August 2005 –December 2009 were included. The primary outcome was a composite of appropriate shock, acute coronary syndrome, ischemic stroke, coronary revascularization, heart failure exacerbation, CV hospitalization, or all-cause death.

Neurologic Complications of Unprotected Transcatheter Aortic Valve Implantation (From the Neuro-TAVI Trial)
This study sought to determine the frequency of neurologic injury, cerebral ischemic lesions, and cognitive dysfunction in subjects undergoing contemporary commercial transcatheter aortic valve implantation (TAVI) in the United States. Neuro-TAVR is the first prospective, multicenter study to employ serial systematic neurologic and cognitive assessments and DW-MRI (at 4 ±2 days postprocedure) to investigate the incidence and severity of neurologic injury following contemporary unprotected TAVI in the US.

Risk Factor Optimization and Guideline-Directed Medical Therapy in US Veterans With Peripheral Arterial and Ischemic Cerebrovascular Disease Compared to Veterans With Coronary Heart Disease
Cardiovascular disease (CVD) is a systemic process involving multiple vascular beds and includes coronary heart disease (CHD), ischemic cerebrovascular disease (ICVD), and peripheral arterial disease (PAD). All these manifestations are associated with an increased risk of subsequent myocardial infarction, stroke, and death. Guideline-directed medical therapy is recommended for all patients with CVD. In a cohort of US veterans, we identified 1,242,015 patients with CVD receiving care in 130 Veterans Affairs facilities from October 1, 2013 to September 30, 2014.
