Hemodynamic Effects of Left Atrial or Left Ventricular Cannulation for Acute Circulatory Support in a Bovine Model of Left Heart Injury
Our objective was to examine the hemodynamic effects of a trans-aortic axial flow catheter (Impella CP) in the left ventricle (LV) versus left atrial (LA) to femoral artery bypass using a centrifugal pump (TandemHeart: TH) in a bovine model of acute LV injury. In three male calves, we performed sequential activation of a CP then TH device in each animal. After 60 minutes of left anterior descending artery ligation, a CP was activated at maximal power. Spectroscopic and Morphological Characterization of Inflow Cannulas of Left Ventricular Assist Devices
In this study, we carried out an in-depth physicochemical characterization of two commercially available LVADs by means of field emission gun scanning electron microscopy, energy dispersive X-ray, and X-ray photoelectron spectra. Cavopulmonary Support with a Microaxial Pump for the Failing Fontan Physiology
The number of patients with the failing Fontan physiology is increasing. We tested a novel in situ microaxial pump (Impella) to support the failing atrio-pulmonary Fontan circulation in an acute pig model. A Fontan model was established in eight juvenile pigs by connecting the right atrium to the main pulmonary artery after tricuspid valve destruction. Platelet-Derived Microparticles Generated by Neonatal Extracorporeal Membrane Oxygenation Systems
The objective of this study was to compare PMP generation in five different neonatal ECMO systems, using a simulated circuit with swine blood at 300 ml/min for 4 hours. Systems were composed of both newer components (centrifugal pump and hollow-fiber oxygenator) and traditional components (roller-head pump and silicone membrane oxygenator). Free plasma hemoglobin levels were measured as an indicator of hemolysis and flow cytometry-measured PMP. Cardiac Function After Acute Support With Direct Mechanical Ventricular Actuation in Chronic Heart Failure
This study evaluated hemodynamics and load-independent systolic/diastolic cardiac function before/after acute support (2 hours) using DMVA in small hearts with induced chronic failure.
