Are age-predicted equations valid in predicting maximum heart rate in individuals after stroke?
CONCLUSIONS: The equations developed for non-disabled individuals (1-4) are not adequate to be used in individuals after a stroke. Equation (6) (Brawner) showed the best results to be used in individuals after stroke; however, it should be used cautiously.PMID:37606274 | DOI:10.1080/09638288.2023.2247981

Dyadic analysis of illness perceptions among individuals with stroke and their caregivers: effects on activity engagement in community living
CONCLUSIONS: Illness perceptions and post-stroke activity engagement with gender differences should be considered at a dyadic level, as the individuals with stroke and their caregivers influence each other's beliefs.PMID:37602644 | DOI:10.1080/09638288.2023.2246378

Physiotherapists' decision-making about transition to independent walking in hospital after stroke: a qualitative study
CONCLUSIONS: Decision-making about independent walking for people in a hospital after a stroke is complex. Improved guidance about clinical assessment of capacity and determining acceptable risk may enable physiotherapists to engage more in shared decision-making.IMPLICATIONS FOR REHABILITATIONRegaining independence in walking after a stroke comes with the potential risk of falls.Assessment of walking safety should be specific to the complexity of the situation and consider perception and cognition.Benefits of activity and autonomy, and the risk of falls need to be considered in decisions about walking independence.Patient...

Validation of Moorong Self-Efficacy Scale among Chinese stroke survivors
CONCLUSIONS: The MSES-C is a reliable and valid instrument for assessing self-efficacy in Chinese stroke survivors.Implications for RehabilitationThe Chinese version of the Moorong Self-Efficacy Scale demonstrated good internal consistency and showed satisfactory concurrent and construct validity among stroke survivors. The Moorong Self-Efficacy Scale can be used to assess stroke recovery among the Chinese population in clinical and research settings.PMID:37555576 | DOI:10.1080/09638288.2023.2241814

Adaptation and content validation of a patient-reported measure of treatment burden for use in stroke survivors: the patient experience with treatment and self-management in stroke (PETS-stroke) measure
CONCLUSIONS: PETS-stroke has content that is relevant, meaningful and comprehensible to stroke survivors. Content validity and reliability testing are now required. The validated tool will aid testing of tailored interventions to lessen treatment burden.IMPLICATIONS FOR REHABILITATIONTreatment burden is reported by stroke survivors but no stroke-specific measure of treatment burden exists. We adapted an existing measure of treatment burden for use in multimorbid patients (PETS) to create a stroke specific version (PETS-stroke).The items in PETS-stroke are relevant and meaningful to people with stroke.Further testing will ex...

"Standing alone": understanding the self-management of family caregivers of persons post-stroke at the time of acute care
CONCLUSION: During acute care, many self-management skills are required from family caregivers but are just starting to be developed. This development can first be observed as co-management with the social network and is often combined with shared decision-making. Information-sharing, foundational for developing self-management, is essential for family caregivers and should be supported proactively by health professionals from the beginning. Further, from the start, health professionals should raise awareness about role changes and imbalances of activities among family caregivers to prevent negative influences on their hea...
