Validation of two short forms of Stroke Impact Scale: unidimensionality and reliability
CONCLUSIONS: The unidimensionality of both versions was supported. The Rasch measures of both appear valid for representing overall HRQOL levels. Both versions also showed acceptable reliability for research purposes.Implications for rehabilitationThe unidimensionality was justified for both versions (Jenkinson's and MacIsaac's eight-item short-versions of Stroke Impact Scale). The Rasch scores of both versions appear valid for representing overall health-related quality of life. Both versions showed acceptable reliability for research purposes, but not sufficiently reliable for clinical use.PMID:36288467 | DOI:10.1080/09638288.2022.2135770

Exploring challenges affecting resilience in carers of stroke survivors: a qualitative descriptive study
CONCLUSION: These findings provide direction for a suitable intervention. Further, they suggest that stroke rehabilitation could be improved by adopting a family-centered model of care so that carers can be included as active partners in care process. Protecting carers from the negative impact of caring role on their resilience may sustain their ability to provide long-term care for the stroke survivor.IMPLICATIONS FOR REHABILITATIONThe provision of informal care to stroke survivors can be associated with significant emotional consequences, withdrawal from social activities, and poor quality of life for the carers. The abru...

Unmet needs in long-term outpatient rehabilitative care: a qualitative and multi-perspective study in Japan
CONCLUSIONS: These findings suggest that in Japanese post-stroke outpatient rehabilitation, there is a need to adopt a comprehensive care approach, enhance the quality of communication, and involve caregivers in the rehabilitation process in limited-resource situations.IMPLICATIONS FOR REHABILITATIONIn long-term outpatient rehabilitation services in the community, stroke patients and their caregivers often face a physical recovery plateau.A comprehensive approach such as enhancing the quality of communication and providing psychological and emotional care -other than physical rehabilitation- is needed, particularly once th...

Reliability and validity of the public transportation use assessment form for individuals after stroke
CONCLUSIONS: The PTAF showed sufficient internal consistency, intra-rater reliability, and construct validity.Implications for rehabilitationThis study illustrated the inter-rater reliability of the public transportation use assessment form (PTAF), indicating that the PTAF can be used for reliable assessment independent of the rater. The PTAF showed good internal consistency, indicating that each item in the PTAF consistently assessed the ability of patients with stroke to use public transportation. The PTAF correlated with assessment tools such as walking ability, balance, motor paralysis, intelligence, and activities of da...

Living with stroke during the first year after onset: an instrumental case study exploring the processes that influence adjustment
CONCLUSIONS: Adjustment to stroke necessitated a reconceptualization of self. Relationships and interactions with others emerged as potential facilitators. For health professionals working with people after stroke, knowledge of the adjustment process and attention to practices that affirm personhood and enhance self-efficacy have the potential to facilitate long term outcomes. Processes linked to adjustment are represented visually to guide conceptual understandings and facilitative actions.IMPLICATIONS FOR REHABILITATIONAll interactions with health professionals, including casual or ad hoc interactions, have the potential...

Key constructs of body awareness impairments post-stroke: a scoping review of assessment tools and interventions
CONCLUSIONS: The framework produced will enable future research and clinical practice to be based on consistent concepts and definitions. Clinicians can also use this information to cautiously select assessment tools and/or interventions but are reminded of the limitations identified in this review.Implications for rehabilitationThere is limited understanding, compounded by inconsistent terminology and definitions regarding body awareness after stroke.A synthesized framework to define key constructs and definitions of body awareness is proposed.Assessment tools and interventions reported in the literature are mapped to the...

How does culture influence the implementation of strategy training in stroke rehabilitation? A rapid ethnographic study of therapist perspectives in Taiwan and the United States
CONCLUSIONS: Therapists from both countries shared similar perspectives on the perceived advantages of strategy training, such as enhancing client empowerment and engagement, and the generalization of strategies. Family involvement was more prominently discussed by therapists in Taiwan than by those in the United States.IMPLICATIONS FOR REHABILITATIONStrategy training differs from conventional rehabilitation in its emphasis on clients' life participation and empowerment, generalization of strategies, and enhancement of their engagement, confidence, and problem-solving skills.Therapists may face challenges related to client...
