Access G-AP: development of an accessible goal setting and action planning resource for stroke survivors with aphasia
CONCLUSIONS: Access G-AP was co-developed to support people with aphasia to access and engage in stroke rehabilitation goal setting. Further research is required to establish the feasibility of Access G-AP in clinical practice.IMPLICATIONS FOR REHABILITATIONEvidence-based accessible formatting strategies and an iterative design process can inform the design of accessible goal setting resources.Accessible goal setting materials should be relevant to stroke survivors with aphasia and responsive to their needs.Rehabilitation staff require training and support to use accessible goal setting resources (like Access G-AP) with st...

Association between post-stroke psychological disorders, activity limitations and health-related quality of life in chronic stroke survivors in Benin
CONCLUSIONS: Depression and anxiety had a negative impact on activity limitations and HRQoL in Beninese chronic stroke survivors. This call for action to integrate psychological interventions as part of rehabilitation programs in low and middle-income countries.Implications for rehabilitationPost-stroke depression and anxiety are quite common among stroke survivors in sub-Saharan Africa.Post-stroke depression and anxiety negatively impact activities and health-related quality of life in chronic stroke survivors in sub-Saharan Africa.Managing these post-stroke psychological disorders is necessary to promote the functional r...

Diagnostic accuracy of the World Health Organization Disability Assessment Schedule (WHODAS 2.0) to estimate disability after stroke
CONCLUSION: WHODAS 2.0 demonstrated acceptable diagnostic capacity and the cutoff point of 39.62 proved suitable for distinguishing individuals with moderate/severe disability from those with no or mild disability after stroke.Implications for rehabilitationWHODAS 2.0 demonstrated acceptable diagnostic capacity. The WHODAS 2.0 cut-off point of >39.62 allows stratification of post-stroke disability into two different levels (no/mild disability versus moderate/severe disability). These results facilitate clinical decision-making by rehabilitation professionals.PMID:35672154 | DOI:10.1080/09638288.2022.2080876

Explicit versus implicit lower extremity sensory retraining for post-stroke chronic sensory deficits: a randomized controlled trial
CONCLUSIONS: Sensory rehabilitation treatment by either ESR or IRE led to similar clinically significant changes in the performance of the lower extremity and participation in subjects with sensory loss post-stroke. Both treatment protocols are easy to implement in an outpatient clinic. .CLINICALTRIALS.GOV REGISTRATION: NCT01988220. Implications for rehabilitationStandardized, structured, sensory-focused training can improve balance and gait in subjects with chronic post-stroke sensory impairment. Both explicit and implicit learning-based sensory protocols focused on the lower extremity effectively improved balance, mobilit...

Self-evaluation of personal needs by community-living young stroke survivors using an online English language questionnaire
CONCLUSIONS: There is high burden of unmet needs in community-living young stroke survivors which are spread disproportionately across the identified domains.IMPLICATIONS FOR REHABILITATIONIdentifying personal needs of young stroke survivors is crucial for their recovery.Impairments after Stroke, Finances, and Social Participation were often selected as being high burden unmet needs for community-living young people after stroke.Employing a post-stroke checklist to guide exploration of needs in young stroke may better capture which needs are unmet.PMID:35617487 | DOI:10.1080/09638288.2022.2076935

Experiences of individuals with multiple sclerosis and stroke using transcutaneous foot drop electrical stimulators: a systematic review and meta-synthesis of qualitative studies
CONCLUSIONS: We recommend that the outcomes to continued use of foot drop electrical stimulators are carefully considered against the barriers. Our conceptual model may be useful to guide clinical conversations around the possible use of FES for managing foot drop in people with multiple sclerosis and stroke.Implications for rehabilitationThe key outcomes to foot drop electrical stimulator use were enhanced walking ability, improved independence and confidence, and enhanced social participation. The main barriers to foot drop electrical stimulator use were device aesthetics, usability challenges, trustworthiness of device i...

Community living after in-hospital specialized rehabilitation in patients with severe disability after stroke: a long-term follow-up after a randomized controlled trial
CONCLUSIONS: This study demonstrates maintenance or progress in important aspects of functioning and health in most participants at long-term follow-up, but not in all.Implications for rehabilitationPatients with severe disability after stroke may maintain or improve their physical functioning and health after a long period of community living, when they receive continuous individualized rehabilitation including physiotherapy.Patients who maintain or improve walking ability and walking speed after living for a long time in the community, may still need assistance with daily activities, especially if they require substantia...

Effects of the home-based exercise program with an augmented reality system on balance in patients with stroke: a randomized controlled trial
CONCLUSIONS: The results of this study suggest that the HEP with the AR system might be effective to improve balance in patients with stroke. However, more careful precautions for the HEP using the AR system are also required. Implications for rehabilitationBalance was modestly improved in both home-based exercise programs, slightly more in AR home exercise group.AR home-based program was significantly better in reducing fear of falling compared to the control group. No falls were recorded, however, safety for patients with arterial dissection needs to be carefully considered due to the possibility of adverse effects.PMID:3...
