Researchers develop tool to identify atherosclerotic plaques at greatest risk for rupture
(Boston University Medical Center) Researchers have developed and validated a new tool to help identify unstable or high risk atherosclerotic plaques --inflamed fatty deposits in the artery wall and a main contributor to cardiovascular disease. This breakthrough may lead to better identifying which plaques are considered at the highest risk for rupturing and causing a heart attack or stroke.

People with gout have lower risk of Alzheimer’s disease
Conclusion This population-based study has found that people with gout had a 24% reduced risk of developing Alzheimer’s disease. It was a well-designed study, in that there were large numbers of people in each group and multiple potential confounding factors were taken into account. The validation of the study was also valuable in showing the expected lack of a link between osteoarthritis and Alzheimer’s disease. However, there are some limitations with this type of study, with a major one being that it cannot prove cause and effect. While some potential confounding factors were accounted for in the statistical analysi...

Long-term effects of contralesional rTMS in severe stroke: Safety, cortical excitability, and relationship with transcallosal motor fibers
CONCLUSIONS: Our results suggest that noninvasive neuromodulation of the contralesional hemisphere may present a possibility to assist adaptive neuroplastic changes in severe chronic stroke. Implementation of DTI-derived measures of transcallosal microstructural integrity may allow for individually-tailored interventions to guide processes of interhemispheric neuroplasticity. Further research is warranted to establish the clinical value of these findings in neurorehabilitation settings for subjects with chronic severe stroke. Foreword
With the mandate for value-based decision-making in health care, the need for evidence-based guidelines to direct decisions regarding the appropriateness of our interventions continues to grow. There is no better model for development of such approaches than the series of well-designed clinical studies directed at the management of extracranial carotid artery disease. Although some questions remain, researchers in this field, using predominantly randomized clinical trials, have developed a robust basis for decision making and standardized care pathways.
