Levetiracetam administration is correlated with lower mortality in patients with mitochondrial encephalomyopathy, lactic acidosis, and stroke-like episodes: a retrospective study.
CONCLUSIONS: The LEV administration is associated with lower mortality in patients with MELAS in this retrospective study. Abstract Epilepsy increases in frequency with age, above 60, with consequences in terms of independence. Stroke and dementia are the most frequent etiologies. A case of refractary epilepsy and related pain due to dysmenorrhea solved with loading dose of lacosamide: clinical and neurophysiological correlates.
Abstract  In most cases, the etiology of epilepsy is unknown, although some individuals may develop epilepsy as a result of certain brain injuries, following a stroke, a brain tumor or because of drugs and alcohol. Even some rare genetic mutations may be related to the onset of the condition. Seizures are the result of excessive and abnormal activity of neurons in the cerebral cortex. Lamotrigine for chronic neuropathic pain and fibromyalgia in adults.
CONCLUSIONS: Large, high-quality, long-duration studies reporting clinically useful levels of pain relief for individual participants provided no convincing evidence that lamotrigine is effective in treating neuropathic pain and fibromyalgia at doses of about 200 to 400 mg daily. Given the availability of more effective treatments including antiepileptics and antidepressant medicines, lamotrigine does not have a significant place in therapy based on the available evidence.
