Role of GLP-1 receptor agonist in diabetic cardio-renal disorder: Recent updates of clinical and pre-clinical evidence
Curr Diabetes Rev. 2023 Aug 9. doi: 10.2174/1573399820666230809152148. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTCardiovascular complications and renal disease is the growing cause of mortality in patients with diabetes. The subversive complications of diabetes such as hyperglycemia, hyperlipidemia and insulin resistance lead to an increase in the risk of myocardial infarction (MI), stroke, heart failure (HF) as well as chronic kidney disease (CKD). Among the commercially available anti-hyperglycemic agents, incretin-based medications appear to be safe and effective in the treatment of type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) and associated ca...

U-shaped association between the triglyceride-glucose index and atrial fibrillation incidence in a general population without known cardiovascular disease
CONCLUSIONS: A U-shaped association between the TyG index and AF incidence is observed in Americans without known cardiovascular diseases. Female sex may be a modifier in the association between the TyG index and AF incidence.PMID:37208737 | DOI:10.1186/s12933-023-01777-9

Primary Occurrence of Cardiovascular Events After Adding Sodium-Glucose Cotransporter-2 Inhibitors or Glucagon-like Peptide-1 Receptor Agonists Compared With Dipeptidyl Peptidase-4 Inhibitors: A Cohort Study in Veterans With Diabetes
CONCLUSION: The addition of GLP1RA was associated with primary reductions of MACE and HF hospitalization compared with DPP4i use; SGLT2i addition was not associated with primary MACE prevention.PRIMARY FUNDING SOURCE: VA Clinical Science Research and Development and supported in part by the Centers for Diabetes Translation Research.PMID:37155984 | DOI:10.7326/M22-2751

Straight from the heart: Mysterious lipids may predict cardiac problems better than cholesterol
Stephanie Blendermann, 65, had good reason to worry about heart disease. Three of her sisters died in their 40s or early 50s from heart attacks, and her father needed surgery to bypass clogged arteries. She also suffered from an autoimmune disorder that results in chronic inflammation and boosts the odds of developing cardiovascular illnesses. “I have an interesting medical chart,” says Blendermann, a real estate agent in Prior Lake, Minnesota. Yet Blendermann’s routine lab results weren’t alarming. At checkups, her low-density lipoprotein (LDL), or “bad,” cholesterol hovered around the 100 milligrams-per-...

Insulin-like Growth Factor 1 and Risk of Cardiovascular Disease: Results from the UK Biobank Cohort Study
CONCLUSION: This study indicates that both low and high levels of circulating IGF-1 are associated with increased risk of CVD in general population. These results highlight the importance of monitoring IGF-1 status on cardiovascular health.PMID:36810801 | DOI:10.1210/clinem/dgad105

Novel biomarkers and emerging tools to identify causal molecular pathways in hypertension and associated cardiovascular diseases
Kardiol Pol. 2023 Feb 5. doi: 10.33963/KP.a2023.0037. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTHypertension (HT) is a modifiable risk factor for life-threatening cardiovascular diseases (CVDs) including coronary artery disease, heart failure or stroke. Despite significant progress in understanding of the pathophysiological mechanisms of the disease, the molecular pathways targeted by HT treatment still remain largely unchanged. This warrants the necessity for searching novel biomarkers, which are causally related to persistent high blood pressure (BP) and may be pharmacologically targeted. Data from large-scale biobanks, containing h...
