Intra‐arterial transplantation of HLA‐matched donor mesoangioblasts in Duchenne muscular dystrophy
This study reports a safe, first‐in‐human mesoangioblast cell therapy to treat Duchenne muscular dystrophy (DMD) in 5 young patients, using a successful preclinical strategy, as an exploratory non‐randomized open‐label phase I‐IIa clinical trial of intra‐arterial HLA‐matched donor cell transplantation.

The cyclic AMP effects and neuroprotective activities of PACAP and VIP in cultured astrocytes and neurons exposed to oxygen-glucose deprivation.
CONCLUSION: The obtained results showed that hypoxia/ischemia may trigger down-regulation of the brain AC-coupled PACAP/VIP receptors, with a consequent decrease of PACAP- and/or VIP-ergic-dependent cAMP-driven signaling. Moreover, our findings indicate that PACAP and VIP can prevent the deleterious effect of OGD on rat neuronal cells. PMID: 25712659 [PubMed - in process]

A decade of cardiac transplantation in Coimbra: The value of experience
Conclusion This 10-year series yielded results equivalent or superior to those of centers with wider and longer experience, and have progressively improved following the introduction of changes prompted by experience. This program has made it possible to raise and maintain the rate of heart transplantation to values above the European average.

Seizures after heart transplantation - two cases of non-immunosuppressant drug interactions in young patients.
Conclusions We conclude that theophylline overdose combined with metoclopramide may provoke new-onset seizures, especially in young patients following heart transplantation. PMID: 25152323 [PubMed - in process]

Cardiovascular Risk Factors and Events in Pancreas-Kidney Transplants
Abstract: Cardiovascular and cerebrovascular disease (CCVD) are major causes of morbidity and mortality among patients with diabetes. Strict control of treatable risk factors that contribute to atherosclerosis is important to reduce the risk of stroke, myocardial infarction, and peripheral arterial disease. Simultaneous pancreas-kidney transplantation (SPKT) may significantly improve these risk factors in patients with type 1 diabetes. We studied 103 SPKT from our center with both organs functioning for metabolic and hypertensive control; body mass index (BMI); immunosuppression; and CCVD events. The 53 females/50 males s...
