Impact of elevated glycosylated hemoglobin on hospital outcome and 1 year survival of primary isolated coronary artery bypass grafting patients
Conclusions This study showed that HbA1c is a good predictor of in-hospital morbidity. It worth devoting time and effort to decrease HbA1c level below 7% to decrease possible postoperative complications.

The relation between nonalcoholic fatty liver disease and carotid intima-media thickness in Egyptian patients
This study was designed to assess the correlation between NAFLD as a cardiovascular risk factor and carotid atherosclerosis. Patients and methods A hospital-based case–control analytical study was conducted on 60 participants who were divided into three groups as follows. Group I included 20 diabetic patients with NAFLD. Group II included 20 nondiabetic patients with NAFLD. Group III included 20 healthy participants who served as a control group. Genetic study of the NOTCH3 gene in CADASIL patients
Conclusion We found four novel mutations (P109T, P203H, IVS7 + 15A>G and IVS7 + 16A>G) and 2 reported NOTCH3 mutations. Exon 4 and Intron 7 are hotspots in the patients we examined with the NOTCH3 mutations. These findings broaden the mutational spectrum of CADASIL.

Clinical safety profile of ticagrelor compared to clopidogrel in 1208 patients: Real world evidence
Conclusion In the real world settings, patients undergoing PCI treated with ticagrelor showed similar safety profile compared to clopidogrel but with increase in minor bleeding rate. The observed results were in alignment with PLATO clinical trial.

New funding to UC Riverside to significantly boost cancer, ALS research
(University of California - Riverside) Maurizio Pellecchia at the University of California, Riverside has received two grants to continue his research aimed at finding therapeutics for cancer, amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), and other neurodegenerative diseases. The first grant from the US-Egypt Science and Technology Joint Fund of the National Academy of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine totals $190,000 for two years. The second is a nearly $2.3 million, five-year grant from the National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke.

Subclinical myocardial dysfunction by tissue Doppler echocardiography in primary antiphospholipid syndrome: Preliminary results
ConclusionThe present study demonstrated subclinical myocardial dysfunction using TDI in asymptomatic PAPS patients. TDI is non-invasive and cost effective. Prospective studies including a large number of participants in order to confirm these preliminary data are needed.
