Supporting post-stroke access to services and resources for individuals with low income: understanding usual care practices in acute care and rehabilitation settings
CONCLUSION: To better support post-stroke access to social services and resource for low-income individuals, a multidisciplinary approach, with actions beginning earlier on and extending throughout the continuum of care, is recommended, in addition to system-level advocacy.PMID:37067052 | DOI:10.1080/09638288.2023.2199462

Scoping Review of the Effectiveness of Screen-to-Screen-Therapy compared to Face-to-Face-Therapy on Naming Performance for Patients with Aphasia.
CONCLUSION: For many patients screen-to-screen-therapy is currently the only possibility to receive speech therapy treatment. Therefore it is a positive aspect that screen-to-screen-therapy is as effective as face-to-face-therapy. Screen-to-screen-therapy can provide expanded access to health care and professional expertise in health services. In this way, speech therapy care during the COVID-19 pandemic can be largely maintained. Further research is needed on evidence-based treatment methods and user-oriented apps for video therapy. Screening for Dysphagia in Adult Patients with Stroke: Assessing the Accuracy of Informal Detection
This study assessed the accuracy of informal dysphagia detection prior to implementation of a formal screening protocol. We conducted a secondary analysis of data captured between 2003 and 2008 from a sample of 250 adult stroke survivors admitted to a tertiary care centre. Using a priori criteria, patient medical records were reviewed for notation about dysphagia; if present, the date/time of notation, writer ’s profession, and suggestion of dysphagia presence. To assess accuracy of notations indicating dysphagia presence, we used speech language pathology (SLP) assessments as the criterion reference. There were 221 pati...

Wants Talk Psychotherapy but Cannot Talk: EMDR for Post-stroke Depression with Expressive Aphasia
CONCLUSION This is the first reported case demonstrating that EMDR can be effective for depression, even in those with severe expressive aphasia. In our case, there was no reluctance to disclose information, simply a neurological inability to do so. Through preparation, patience, perseverance, and plasticity (clinician flexibility, though perhaps also neuroplasticity), the patient’s PSD gradually improved, and she was able to reinvent her life within her limitations. ACKNOWLEDGMENTS The authors gratefully acknowledge Eugene Schwartz, E.C. Hurley, and Mark Hubner for providing consultation during patient care. REFERENCES ...
