Venous thromboembolism in patients with idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis, based on nationwide claim data

Direct oral anticoagulant use in special populations
Purpose of review The pivotal phase III trials demonstrating efficacy and safety of direct oral anticoagulants (DOACs) in the treatment of venous thromboembolism (VTE) or nonvalvular atrial fibrillation (NVAF) excluded patients with important and common comorbidities, including obesity, advanced chronic kidney disease, cirrhosis, cancer and antiphospholipid antibody syndrome. Despite the lack of large prospective randomized control trials in these patient populations, the use of DOACs has led to a wealth of efficacy and safety data within these groups. Recent findings Retrospective studies, meta-analyses, nation...

Hypercoagulation as the main cause of death in COPD
Conclusion: In the literature there are many data on the main causes of death for patients with COPD, such as respiratory failure, lung cancer, pulmonary thromboembolism, but due to the high comorbidity of COPD with cardiovascular pathology, and the mechanism of mutual complications of these nosologies, according to our research, today the main causes of death for patients with COPD are cardiovascular accidents caused by hypercoagulation.

The impact of smoking on thromboembolism and mortality in patients with incident atrial fibrillation: insights from the Danish Diet, Cancer and Health study.
CONCLUSIONS Smoking is associated with a higher risk of thromboembolism or death in patients with AF even after adjusting for well-recognised risk factors used in stroke risk stratification schemes. The associations may be modified by sex, as the associations were strongest among women. PMID: 24091709 [PubMed - as supplied by publisher]
