Noninfectious complications of acute stroke and their impact on hospital mortality in patients admitted to a stroke unit in Warsaw from 1995 to 2015
Conclusions Over the last two decades Polish urban stroke units may have achieved a significant reduction of the occurrence of some noninfectious complications (i.e. MI, exacerbated CHF and DVT). However, the list of conditions associated with stroke unit mortality includes not only MI and exacerbated CHF but also PE, gastrointestinal bleeding and recurrent stroke.

Stroke epidemiology based on experience from Krasnik county in eastern Poland.
CONCLUSIONS: Women aged around 78-years-old were the most likely to suffer a stroke. In men, it occurred eight years earlier. Despite residents of urban areas being hospitalised due to stroke more often, deaths caused by this disease were recorded the most frequently among rural residents. It can be concluded that primary stroke prevention is the only effective measure for reducing morbidity and premature mortality in the population. PMID: 32955229 [PubMed - in process]

Early and One-Year Outcomes of Acute Stroke in the Industrial Region of Poland During the Decade 2006 –2015: The Silesian Stroke Registry
Conclusions: In a large population of industrial province, we showed recent, positive trends in AS admissions, treatment and 1-year outcomes. Development of stroke unit networks and increase in thrombolytic treatment were at least in part responsible for survival improvement and reduction of recurrence of AS. However, case-fatality and stroke recurrence remain high compared to those of other developed countries.Neuroepidemiology 2018;50:183 –194

The importance of atrial fibrillation and selected echocardiographic parameters for the effectiveness and safety of thrombolytic therapy in patients with stroke
ConclusionsThe presence of atrial fibrillation worsens the patient's prognosis in terms of the functional status and survival during the acute period of stroke in patients treated with intravenous thrombolysis.Higher NIHSS and CHA2DS2VASc scores and reduced EF in patients with stroke treated with thrombolysis are the predictors of unfavorable short-term prognosis.

Polish Helicopter Emergency Medical Service (HEMS) Response to Stroke: A Five-Year Retrospective Study.
CONCLUSIONS The use of HEMS in Poland in the case of patients with stroke symptoms ensures fast and professional assistance at the site of the medical emergency as well as safe transport to specialized centers, shortening the time of proper treatment implementation. Mechanisms of cardioembolic stroke revisited. Atrial cardiopathy.
Abstract There has been only moderate progress in our understanding of potential relation between atrial arrhythmia and stroke over years. Current approach is still based on a hypothesis that atrial contractile dysfunction due to fibrillation causes blood stasis, which accompanied by other factors acting together as Virchow's triad produces thrombus and embolism to the brain. In this review we would like to discuss a relatively new concept of atrial cardiopathy. It assumes that risk of thromboembolism is increased regardless of atrial rhythm, being largely driven by atrial tissue abnormalities, such as fibrosis, e...

The evaluation of the recommended prevention of thrombosis in hospitalized patients with atrial fibrillation and high thromboembolism risk.
ConclusionsOral anticoagulants was indicated on discharge for 2/3 of patients with atrial fibrillation and high risk of stroke, and more often in patients with low risk of bleeding events. An increase in the number of oral anticoagulants indications has been observed in the recent 9 years. The factors which led to the lack of oral anticoagulants indications among patients with a high stroke risk were: hospitalization in years 2004-2006, high risk of bleeding, vascular disease, age≥80 years, paroxysmal atrial fibrillation and previous bleeding. Dual antiplatelet therapy is safe and efficient after left atrial appendage closure.
CONCLUSIONS: LAAC followed by DAPT seems to be a safe and efficient alternative for stroke prevention in patients with NVAF and contraindications to anticoagulation therapy. This strategy may provide a significant reduction of events such as stroke and bleeding versus the score-predicted rate. PMID: 29350390 [PubMed - as supplied by publisher]

Causes of death and morbidity in patients with atrial fibrillation after left atrial appendage occlusion.
CONCLUSION: The majority of deaths are not related to stroke in patients with AF after the LAAO procedure. Mortality in first 2 years following the procedure was predominantly from non-cardiovascular causes. Key words: atrial fibrillation, LAAO, left atrial appendage, stroke. Percutaneous left atrial appendage occlusion in the current practice
Kardiol Pol. 2021 Mar 5. doi: 10.33963/KP.15864. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTOral anticoagulation (OAC) is the standard of care for stroke prevention in atrial fibrillation (AF) but is associated with a substantial risk of bleeding complications and is dependent on optimal patient´s compliance. In patients with non-valvular AF, the left atrial appendage is the source of thrombi that may cause stroke in up to 91-95% of cases. Thus, percutaneous left atrial appendage occlusion (LAAO) is increasingly being performed as an alternative to OAC for stroke prophylaxis in patients at increased bleeding risk. Current evidence sup...
