Peri-Operative Outcomes of Carotid Endarterectomy are Not Improved on Dual Antiplatelet Therapy vs. Aspirin Monotherapy: A Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis
CONCLUSION: This meta-analysis found that CEA while on DAPT increased the risk of haemorrhagic complications, with similar rates of ischaemic complications, vs. aspirin monotherapy. This suggests that the risks of performing CEA on DAPT outweigh the benefits, even in patients with symptomatic carotid stenosis. The overall quality of studies was low, and improved reporting of CEA outcomes in the literature is necessary.PMID:35241374 | DOI:10.1016/j.ejvs.2021.12.037

Carotid artery endarterectomy in patients with symptomatic non-stenotic carotid artery disease
CONCLUSION: CEA appears to be safe and well-tolerated in patients with SyNC. Additional studies with larger cohorts and longer follow-up intervals are needed in order to determine the role of CEA in this patient population.PMID:35241631 | DOI:10.1136/svn-2021-000939

Carotid Endarterectomy and Carotid Artery Stenting for Symptomatic Carotid Stenosis: An Experience of a Hybrid Neurosurgeon in a Developing Nation
Conclusion: CAS and CEA are complementary approaches in treating symptomatic carotid stenosis even when performed by a single hybrid neurosurgeon as results obtained are commensurable to major studies like CREST.

Carotid Endarterectomy After Intracranial Endovascular Thrombectomy for Acute Ischaemic Stroke in Patients with Carotid Artery Stenosis
CONCLUSION: These results indicate that CEA is safe to perform after previous successful EVT for acute ischaemic stroke. Results were comparable with those undergoing CEA only, despite the EVT+CEA patients having more severe stroke symptoms prior to surgery, and timing was similar.PMID:34887207 | DOI:10.1016/j.ejvs.2021.10.034

Relevance of Infarct Size, Timing of Surgery, and Peri-operative Management for Non-ischaemic Cerebral Complications After Carotid Endarterectomy
CONCLUSION: Infarct size and unintended high peri-operative blood pressure may increase the risk of non-ischaemic complications at CEA independently of whether performed early or delayed.PMID:34872814 | DOI:10.1016/j.ejvs.2021.09.044

Contribution of Endoplasmic Reticulum Stress to the Clinical Instability of Carotid Plaques in Human Carotid Stenosis
AbstractEndoplasmic reticulum (ER) stress is an important process during the progression of atherosclerosis. The aim of this study was to elucidate the association of ER stress and clinical instability of carotid plaque. One hundred ninety-three patients with carotid stenosis undergoing carotid endarterectomies (CEAs) were enrolled. We classified the patients into 3 groups: the asymptomatic, symptomatic, and cTIA (crescendo transient ischemic attack)/SIE (stroke in evolution) groups. Immunohistological staining was performed to assess ER stress and apoptosis. The correlation between ER stress marker expression and clinical...
