Association between serum Vitamin E concentrations and the presence of Metabolic Syndrome: A population-based cohort study
Conclusions. There is a significant inverse association between indices of Vit E status and the presence of MetS. Moreover, a significantly lower Vit E/ (TC+TG) was observed along with individuals with increasing numbers of components of the MetS.PMID:34212939 | DOI:10.23750/abm.v92i3.9173

Interventions for reducing sedentary behaviour in community-dwelling older adults
CONCLUSIONS: It is not clear whether interventions to reduce sedentary behaviour are effective at reducing sedentary time in community-dwelling older adults. We are uncertain if these interventions have any impact on the physical or mental health of community-dwelling older adults. There were few studies, and the certainty of the evidence is very low to low, mainly due to inconsistency in findings and imprecision. Future studies should consider interventions aimed at modifying the environment, policy, and social and cultural norms. Future studies should also use device-based measures of sedentary time, recruit larger sampl...

Stroke management in a Swiss community hospital - in close collaboration with a stroke centre
CONCLUSION: Our findings support further education of the population in recognition of stroke symptoms and assessment of cardiovascular risk factors according to guidelines. Telemedical cooperation with a local stroke centre can result in adequate quality of care in these patients.PMID:34098584 | DOI:10.4414/smw.2021.20490

Obesity in Teens, Higher Risk of Stroke Before 50
THURSDAY, May 13, 2021 -- Strokes are on the rise among people younger than 50, and new research suggests that packing on the pounds during the teen years is a big reason why. The more overweight you were from ages 16 to 20, the greater your risk of...

COVID-19 and Thromboinflammation: Is There a Role for Statins?
The novel coronavirus disease (COVID-19) showed increased morbidity and mortality rates and worse prognosis in individuals with underlying chronic diseases, especially cardiovascular disease and its risk factors, such as hypertension, diabetes, and obesity. There is also evidence of possible links among COVID-19, myocardial infarction, and stroke. Emerging evidence suggests a pro-inflammatory milieu and hypercoagulable state in patients with this infection. Despite anticoagulation, a large proportion of patients requiring intensive care may develop life-threatening thrombotic complications. Indeed, the levels of some marke...

Effect of Brachial-Ankle Pulse Wave Velocity Combined with Waist-to-Hip Ratio on Cardiac and Cerebrovascular Events
CONCLUSIONS: BaPWV and WHR were important risk factors for CCVEs and had synergistic effects. When baPWV increased, WHR may contribute more to the risk of CCVEs in hypertensive patients.PMID:33621529 | DOI:10.1016/j.amjms.2021.02.014

Maternal Cardiovascular Health
Historically, the focus on the development of atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease has been on individual risk factors. These factors, which are associated with increased risk of myocardial infarction and stroke, were identified in the Framingham Study and other longitudinal observational studies of adults. The traditional risk factors are hypertension, dyslipidemia, obesity, diabetes, and cigarette smoking. Subsequently, other potential risk factors, such as inflammation and insulin resistance, have been included in the discussion. The recognition of risk factors was a substantial advance because it provided clinical ta...

Screening strategies for hypertension.
CONCLUSIONS: There is an implicit assumption that early detection of hypertension through screening can reduce the burden of morbidity and mortality, but this assumption has not been tested in rigorous research studies. High-quality evidence from RCTs or programmatic evidence from NRCTs on the effectiveness and costs or harms of different screening strategies for hypertension (mass, targeted, or opportunistic) to reduce hypertension-related morbidity and mortality is lacking.
