A systematic review on the safety of second-generation transcatheter aortic valves.
CONCLUSIONS: Our findings suggest that the new THV have a low risk of TAVI-related short-term complications. PMID: 26788706 [PubMed - as supplied by publisher]

The SYNERGY II Everolimus elutiNg stent In patients Older than 75 years undergoing coronary Revascularisation associated with a short dual antiplatelet therapy (SENIOR) trial: rationale and design of a large-scale randomised multicentre study.
CONCLUSIONS: This trial is designed to evaluate a new revascularisation strategy combining DES and short duration DAPT in elderly patients. It has the potential to decrease the need for target lesion revascularisation without a significant DAPT-related increase in bleeding compared to BMS. PMID: 26690312 [PubMed - as supplied by publisher]

Thirty-day VARC-2 and performance data of a new self-expanding transcatheter aortic heart valve.
CONCLUSIONS: In this first-in-human study, the feasibility of implantation of the BIOVALVE system and its re-sheathing functionality was demonstrated, and short-term safety data were encouraging. Larger studies are required to confirm the performance of the device. PMID: 25983028 [PubMed - as supplied by publisher]

Safety and performance of a novel embolic deflection device in patients undergoing transcatheter aortic valve replacement: results from the DEFLECT I study.
CONCLUSIONS: Use of the first-generation TriGuard EDD during TAVR is safe, and device performance was successful in 80% of cases during the highest embolic-risk portions of the TAVR procedure. The potential of the TriGuard EDD to reduce total cerebral ischaemic burden merits further randomised investigation. PMID: 25868876 [PubMed - as supplied by publisher]

Anaesthetic management of transcatheter aortic valve implantation: results from the Italian CoreValve registry.
CONCLUSIONS: Our study indicates that, in experienced centres which have gone beyond their initial learning curve with TAVI, the use of local anaesthesia in a selected patient population can be associated with good clinical outcomes. Nevertheless, as severe procedural complications are possible, an anaesthesiologist should always be present as part of the team. PMID: 25772903 [PubMed - as supplied by publisher]

Left atrial appendage occlusion for stroke prevention in atrial fibrillation: multicentre experience with the AMPLATZER Cardiac Plug.
Conclusions: In this multicentre study, LAAO with the ACP showed high procedural success and a favourable outcome for the prevention of AF-related thromboembolism. Modification in antithrombotic therapy after LAAO may result in reduction of bleeding events. PMID: 25604089 [PubMed - as supplied by publisher]

Left atrial appendage closure for stroke prevention in non-valvular atrial fibrillation: rationale, devices in clinical development and insights into implantation techniques.
CONCLUSIONS: Catheter-based LAA occlusion is now being developed further as an interventional approach for stroke prevention in patients with atrial fibrillation. Implantation techniques and devices are being improved, which will probably result in better procedural safety. Appropriate operator training is of major importance for this approach. PMID: 25138187 [PubMed - in process]

Percutaneous left atrial appendage occlusion in patients with non-valvular atrial fibrillation: implantation and up to four years follow-up of the AMPLATZER Cardiac Plug.
Conclusions: LAAO is a safe and effective stroke prevention therapy in a high-risk NVAF cohort, both at implantation and over longer follow-up periods. The long-term assessed ischaemic stroke rate in patients treated with LAAO is markedly reduced compared to the expected rate based on the patients' risk scores.
