Chronic comorbid conditions and asthma exacerbation occurrence in a general population sample
In conclusion, several chronic comorbid conditions were associated with asthma exacerbation occurrence, which confirms but also complements previous studies. Our observations contribute to understanding exacerbation risk estimation and, ultimately, personalized asthma management.PMID:37567896 | DOI:10.1038/s41533-023-00350-x

Air leak in Covid 19: experience from a DGH in the UK
Conclusions: Inpatient incidence of PTX and PM is still approximately 1%. Survival is better as overall Covid19 survival improves(direct mortality from air leak approx. 21 %) with mortality due to other factors rather than the air leak.

Impact of cardiovascular disease on in-hospital mortality in patients with COVID-19
Conclusion: COVID-19 patients with CVD comorbidites have a higher risk of in-hospital death. Optimal care and good control of CVD are essential in this patient group.

Local incidence and outcomes of patients with pneumothorax and pneumomediastinum in COVID-19
Conclusions: Inpatient incidence of PTX and PM is 0.98%. Survival is lower (54.5%) but difficult to compare in the presence of frailty and co-morbidities.

ICS withdrawal and rate of FEV1 decline in a primary care COPD population in England
Conclusion: In contrast to the WISDOM trial, mean rates of FEV1 decline were clinically similar between COPD patients on TT and COPD patients who withdrew from ICS.

Doxycycline for community treatment of suspected COVID-19 in people at high risk of adverse outcomes in the UK (PRINCIPLE): a randomised, controlled, open-label, adaptive platform trial
Lancet Respir Med. 2021 Jul 27:S2213-2600(21)00310-6. doi: 10.1016/S2213-2600(21)00310-6. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTBACKGROUND: Doxycycline is often used for treating COVID-19 respiratory symptoms in the community despite an absence of evidence from clinical trials to support its use. We aimed to assess the efficacy of doxycycline to treat suspected COVID-19 in the community among people at high risk of adverse outcomes.METHODS: We did a national, open-label, multi-arm, adaptive platform randomised trial of interventions against COVID-19 in older people (PRINCIPLE) across primary care centres in the UK. We included peo...

Genetic analysis of obstructive sleep apnoea discovers a strong association with cardiometabolic health
There is currently limited understanding of the genetic aetiology of obstructive sleep apnoea (OSA). We aimed to identify genetic loci associated with OSA risk, and to test if OSA and its comorbidities share a common genetic background. We conducted the first large-scale genome-wide association study of OSA using the FinnGen study (217 955 individuals) with 16 761 OSA patients identified using nationwide health registries. We estimated 0.08 (95% CI 0.06–0.11) heritability and identified five loci associated with OSA (p<5.0x10–8): rs4837016 near GAPVD1 (GTPase activating protein and VPS9 domains 1), rs1092856...

Accelerated FEV1 decline and risk of cardiovascular disease and mortality in a primary care population of COPD patients
Accelerated lung function decline has been associated with increased risk of cardiovascular disease (CVD) in a general population, but little is known about this association in chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). We investigated the association between accelerated lung function decline and CVD outcomes and mortality in a primary care COPD population. COPD patients without a history of CVD were identified in the Clinical Practice Research Datalink (CPRD)-GOLD primary care dataset (n=36 382). Accelerated decline in forced expiratory volume in 1 s (FEV1) was defined using the fastest quartile of the COPD popula...

The Relationship Between Asthma and Cardiovascular Disease: An Examination of the Framingham Offspring Study.
Abstract BACKGROUND: Although asthma has been suggested as a risk factor for cardiovascular disease (CVD), robust longitudinal evidence of this relationship is limited. RESEARCH QUESTION: Using Framingham Offspring Cohort data, we sought to longitudinally examine the association between asthma and lifetime risk of CVD while controlling for cardiovascular risk factors included in the Framingham Risk Score. STUDY DESIGN AND METHODS: We analyzed data from a prospective population-based cohort of 3,612 individuals, ages 17 to 77 years, who participated in Framingham Offspring Study examinations from 1979 to ...

Forecasting the association of air quality and health outcomes in Ontario
Conclusions: Positive correlations between AQHI and health outcomes are found in this study which revealed that making the public aware of air pollution using AQHI may be helpful to reduce the impact of air pollution in people living with chronic diseases.

COPD as an additional risk factor for cardiovascular and respiratory events in patients with respiratory viral infection
Conclusion: There is no association between respiratory viral infection and COPD with the development of CVE or RE one year after positive virus PCR, regardless of previous CVRF. Both patients with CVRF without COPD and women with CVRF have more CVE.
