Nursing Diagnosis Accuracy in Nursing Education: Clinical Decision Support System Compared With Paper-Based Documentation-A Before and After Study
Comput Inform Nurs. 2023 Aug 15. doi: 10.1097/CIN.0000000000001066. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTComputer-based technologies have been widely used in nursing education, although the best educational modality to improve documentation and nursing diagnostic accuracy using electronic health records is still under investigation. It is important to address this gap and seek an effective way to address increased accuracy around nursing diagnoses identification. Nursing diagnoses are judgments that represent a synthesis of data collected by the nurse and used to guide interventions and to achieve desirable patients' outcomes. Th...

Everyday Pain in Middle and Later Life: Associations with Daily and Momentary Present-Moment Awareness as One Key Facet of Mindfulness
This study investigated everyday associations between one key facet of mindfulness (allocating attention to the present moment) and pain. In Study 1, 89 community-dwelling adults (33-88 years; Mage = 68.6) who had experienced a stroke provided 14 daily end-of-day present-moment awareness and pain ratings. In Study 2, 100 adults (50-85 years; Mage = 67.0 years) provided momentary present-moment awareness and pain ratings three times daily for 10 days. Multi-level models showed that higher trait present-moment awareness was linked with lower overall pain (both studies). In Study 1, participants reported less pain on days on ...

Trend over time on knowledge of the health effects of cigarette smoking and smokeless tobacco use in Bangladesh: Findings from the International Tobacco Control Policy Evaluation Bangladesh Surveys
CONCLUSIONS: The results suggest that increasing efforts of awareness policy interventions is having a positive effect on tobacco-related knowledge in Bangladesh. These policy initiatives should be continued to identify optimal methods to facilitate behaviour change and improve cessation of smoking and ST use.PMID:37565295 | DOI:10.1111/dar.13735

News at a glance: A win for obesity drugs, NIH unionization roadblocks, and Mexican fireflies under threat
CONSERVATION Researchers raise alarm over threat to Mexican fireflies Scientists from the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) last week delivered a letter to the Mexican government requesting it regulate tourism centered on the threatened firefly species Photinus palaciosi . Endemic to Mexico’s Tlaxcala forests, P. palaciosi is one of the few species that glow in synchrony, offering an annual spectacle that attracts thousands of visitors during summer mating season. The letter describes how littering, artificial light, and noise interfere with the insects’ courtship and eg...

Genes That Extend Lifespan May Do So by Mitigating the Increased Risk of Death Posed by Having Hypertension
Am J Hypertens. 2023 Aug 10:hpad070. doi: 10.1093/ajh/hpad070. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTGenetic factors influence lifespan. In humans, there appears to be a particularly strong genetic effect in those aged ≥ 90 years. An important contribution is nutrient sensing genes which confer cell resilience. Our research has been investigating the genetic factors by longitudinal studies of American men of Japanese descent living on the island of Oahu in Hawaii. This cohort began as the Honolulu Heart Program in the mid-1960s and most subjects are now deceased. We previously discovered various genes containing polymorphisms as...

Screening for clinically relevant drug-drug interactions between direct oral anticoagulants and antineoplastic agents: a pharmacovigilance approach
ConclusionNo signal of DDIs between DOACs and antineoplastic agents was detected, except for DOAC-neratinib. Most DDIs between DOACs and antineoplastic agents may not be clinically relevant. The DDIs between DOACs and neratinib should be further examined in future research.

The effects of Baduanjin on physical function, daily living activities and quality of life in patients with stroke: a systematic review and meta-analysis
CONCLUSIONS: Baduanjin is probably an effective rehabilitation method to improve balance, motor, trunk, neurological functions, daily living activities, and quality of life in stroke patients. However, the result of Baduanjin in improving walking function is unstable, and further high-quality randomized controlled trials are needed to confirm the results.PMID:37555455 | DOI:10.1080/10749357.2023.2238433

LM02 trial Perioperative treatment with panitumumab and FOLFIRI in patients with wild-type RAS, potentially resectable colorectal cancer liver metastases —a phase II study
ConclusionsPanitumumab and FOLFIRI as perioperative therapy for resectable CLM result in a radiological objective response rate in 65.7% of patients with a manageable grade 3 diarrhea rate of 14.3%. Median PFS was 13.2 months, and the 24-month OS rate was 73.3%. These data are insufficient to widen the indication of panitumumab from the unresectable setting to the setting of resectable CLM.

Where You Live Can Shape How Alzheimer ’ s Affects You
The FDA in mid-July for the first time ever approved an Alzheimer’s drug, Leqembi. The annual price-tag will run patients $26,500. The same week, the Alzheimer’s Association for the first time ever released county-level data to identify which communities are most struggling with the disease. 6.7 million Americans live with Alzheimer’s disease and 134,000 of them will die because of it each year. We’ve known these aggregate numbers for a while now, but with new data and new drugs, healthcare specialists can now better target attention and resources. [time-brightcove not-tgx=”true”] ...
