Evolution of non-fatal burden estimates for cardiovascular disease in Australia: a comparison of national and state-wide methodology of burden of disease
ConclusionsPrevalence estimates require the best available data sources, updated disease models and constant review to inform government policy and health reform. Availability of nation-wide linked data will markedly improve future burden estimates.PMID:36395787 | DOI:10.1071/AH22149

Rural versus metropolitan comparison of processes of care in the community-based management of TIA and minor stroke in Australia (an analysis from the INSIST study)
CONCLUSIONS: Although TIAMS prognosis in rural settings where solely GP care is common is very good, the processes of care in such areas are inferior to metropolitan. This suggests there is further scope to support rural GPs to optimise care of TIAMS patients.PMID:36382851 | DOI:10.1111/ajr.12950

Costs of major complications in people with and without diabetes in Tasmania, Australia
ConclusionsDiabetes complications are costly, and the costs are higher in people with diabetes than without diabetes. Our results can be used to populate diabetes simulation models and will support policy analyses to reduce the burden of diabetes.PMID:36375176 | DOI:10.1071/AH22180

Management is multidisciplinary and based on evidence from fatigue management in other conditions.Implications for rehabilitationMost health professionals are not routinely using formal assessment tools for fatigue, possibly due to a lack of consensus on best practice in research.Common strategies recommended by health professionals include energy optimisation strategies, education and exercise.Comprehensive guidelines for post-stroke fatigue management are yet to be established.Health professionals should assess post-stroke fatigue using...

Predictors of herpes zoster vaccination among Australian adults aged 65 and over
CONCLUSION(S): Further research is required to understand the barriers to HZ vaccine uptake. Increasing the funding eligibility for those who are at risk of complications from shingles, or lowering the age of eligibility, may increase vaccine coverage.PMID:36336528 | DOI:10.1016/j.vaccine.2022.10.064

Oral Anticoagulant Use in Patients With Atrial Fibrillation and Chronic Kidney Disease: A Review of the Evidence With Recommendations for Australian Clinical Practice
Chronic kidney disease is common in patients with atrial fibrillation (AF) and is associated with heightened risks of stroke/systemic embolisation and bleeding. In this review we outline the evidence for AF stroke prevention in kidney disease, identify current knowledge gaps, and give recommendations for anticoagulation at various stages of chronic kidney disease.Overall, anticoagulation is underused. Warfarin use becomes increasingly difficult with advancing kidney disease, with difficulty maintaining international normalised ratio (INR) in therapeutic range, increased risk of intracranial and fatal bleeding compared to n...

Improving stroke clinical guideline adherence in an Australian hospital using a clinician-led implementation process
