Strengthening vaccines and medicines manufacturing capabilities in Africa: challenges and perspectives
EMBO Mol Med. 2022 Jun 27:e16287. doi: 10.15252/emmm.202216287. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTAfrica carries a high burden of infectious diseases. Every year, millions of Africans contract tuberculosis, malaria, and many other diseases. Malaria kills hundreds of thousands of children under the age of five years annually. More than 11,000 people died during the 2014-2016 Ebola outbreak in West Africa; still, occasional cases of Ebola, as well as monkeypox, periodically appear in the Democratic Republic of Congo. Since most of the African countries gained their independence during the 1960s, the continent has relied heavily ...

Effect of Recombinant Vesicular Stomatitis Virus-Zaire Ebola Virus Vaccination on Ebola Virus Disease Illness and Death, Democratic Republic of the Congo
Emerg Infect Dis. 2022 Jun;28(6):1180-1188. doi: 10.3201/eid2806.212223.ABSTRACTWe conducted a retrospective cohort study to assess the effect vaccination with the live-attenuated recombinant vesicular stomatitis virus-Zaire Ebola virus vaccine had on deaths among patients who had laboratory-confirmed Ebola virus disease (EVD). We included EVD-positive patients coming to an Ebola Treatment Center in eastern Democratic Republic of the Congo during 2018-2020. Overall, 25% of patients vaccinated before symptom onset died compared with 63% of unvaccinated patients. Vaccinated patients reported fewer EVD-associated symptoms, ha...

Setting-up an Ebola vaccine trial in a remote area of the Democratic Republic of the Congo: Challenges, mitigations, and lessons learned
Vaccine. 2022 May 9:S0264-410X(22)00544-8. doi: 10.1016/j.vaccine.2022.04.094. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTSince the largest Ebola outbreak in West Africa (2013-2016) highlighted the potential threat of the Ebola virus to the world, several vaccines have been under development by different pharmaceutical companies. To obtain vaccine licensure, vaccine trials assessing the safety, immunogenicity and efficacy of new vaccines among different populations (e.g. different in age, gender, race, and ethnicity) play a crucial role. However, while this deadly disease mainly affects Central and West Africa, clinical trial regulatio...

One-step single-tube accelerated quantitative nucleoprotein gene-specific reverse transcription loop-mediated isothermal gene amplification (RT-LAMP) assay for rapid, real-time & amp; reliable clinical detection of Ebola virus
CONCLUSIONS: Thus, due to easy operation without a requirement of sophisticated equipment and skilled personnel, the RT-LAMP assay reported here is a valuable tool as a point-of-care diagnosis for the rapid and real-time detection of Ebola virus in resource-limited healthcare settings of developing countries.PMID:35435345 | DOI:10.4103/ijmr.IJMR_864_19
