Insights from a national survey in 2021 and from modelling on progress towards hepatitis C virus elimination in the country of Georgia since 2015
ConclusionResults support the programme's high effectiveness. At current treatment rate (406/month), 90% reductions in prevalence and incidence in Georgia are achievable by 2030.PMID:37498534 | PMC:PMC10375834 | DOI:10.2807/1560-7917.ES.2023.28.30.2200952

The role of Type I interferons in the pathogenesis of foot-and-mouth disease virus in cattle: A mathematical modelling analysis
In this study, we explore the interaction between Type I IFN and foot-and-mouth disease virus (FMDV), focusing on the effect of this interaction on epithelial cell death. While several mathematical models have explored the interaction between interferon and viruses at a systemic level, with most of the work undertaken on influenza and hepatitis C, these cannot investigate why a virus such as FMDV causes extensive cell death in some epithelial tissues leading to the development of lesions, while other infected epithelial tissues exhibit negligible cell death. Our study shows how a model that includes epithelial tissue struc...

Profile of patients with a positive HCV viral load in a large French psychiatric hospital (2019-2021): A case-control study
J Viral Hepat. 2023 Jul 23. doi: 10.1111/jvh.13875. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTHepatitis C virus (HCV) is highly prevalent in people with mental disorders (PWMDs). However, in the international context of HCV elimination, no previous study has explored the features of seropositive PWMDs with vs. without a positive viral load (VL). We retrospectively retrieved all HCV serology results of patients hospitalized in 2019, 2020 and 2021 in the second-largest psychiatric hospital of France. Using the medical records of all patients found seropositive for HCV, the following data were collected: sex (male, female), age (in years...

Hepatitis C Virus-HIV Coinfection in the United States Among People Who Inject Drugs: Data Needed for Ending Dual Epidemics
Public Health Rep. 2023 Jul 22:333549231181348. doi: 10.1177/00333549231181348. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTThe overlapping epidemics of hepatitis C virus (HCV) and HIV infection stem from underlying behaviors and health disparities among disproportionately affected populations, especially people who inject drugs (PWID). Characterizing the prevalence of HCV-HIV coinfection offers improved data to address these underlying determinants of health. We performed a literature search for articles that describe US populations, were published during 2005-2021, and summarized evidence of the prevalence of HCV infection in recent H...

Clinical Practice Guidelines For the Management of Hepatocellular Carcinoma: A Systematic Review
ConclusionsThe included CPGs provided a comprehensive approach, emphasizing the evaluation of risk factors, utilization of the BCLC staging system, and the importance of a multidisciplinary approach. Regular surveillance using ultrasound for cirrhotic patients was widely recommended. An understanding of contemporary international CPGs can prioritize aspects of the management of HCC to assist healthcare professionals to develop a national guideline to enable standardized, comprehensive, and evidence-based care for patients with HCC.

Real-world effectiveness and safety of direct-acting antivirals in hepatitis C virus patients with mental disorders
CONCLUSION: DAA treatment is safe and effective in HCV-infected patients with mental disorders. No specific psychiatric diagnosis lowered the chance of successful antiviral treatment.PMID:37476581 | PMC:PMC10354581 | DOI:10.3748/wjg.v29.i25.4085
