< em > In silico < /em > genotyping of blood group alleles using WGS data: a comparative study of the Orang Asli in Peninsular Malaysia
This study reports four alleles (rs12075, rs7683365, rs586178 and rs2298720) of DUFFY, MNS, RH and KIDD blood group systems which were significantly distinct between indigenous Orang Asli and cosmopolitanMalaysians. Eighteen alleles that belong to 14 blood group systems were found statistically distinct in comparison to global population datasets. Although not much significant differences were observed in phenotypes of most blood group systems, major insights were observed when comparing Orang Asli with aboriginal Australians and cosmopolitanMalaysians. This study serves as the first of its kind to utilize genomic data to i...

Limited Polymorphism in the Dihydrofolate Reductase (dhfr) and dihydropteroate synthetase genes (dhps) of Plasmodium knowlesi isolate from Thailand
CONCLUSIONS: A new PCR protocol amplification and evaluation of dihydropteroate synthetase mutations in Knowlesi (pkdhps) has been developed. The most prevalent pkdhfr-pkdhps haplotypes (53.57%) in southern Thailand are R34L pkdhfr mutation and pkdhps quadruple mutation. Further investigation requires additional phenotypic data from clinical isolates, transgenic lines expressing mutant alleles, or recombinant proteins.PMID:37683820 | DOI:10.1016/j.actatropica.2023.107016

Stroke Riskometer Application (SRA ™) influence on lifestyle changes of home bound familial Malaysian stroke caregivers: a randomised controlled trial in a primary care based longer term stroke care facility
CONCLUSION: SRA™ is a useful tool for familial stroke caregivers to make lifestyle changes, although it did not reduce personal or relative stroke risk after 3 months usage.TRIAL REGISTRATION: No: ACTRN12618002050235 (Registration Date: 21st December 2018).PMID:37684626 | PMC:PMC10486033 | DOI:10.1186/s12875-023-02138-x

Enhancing coastal ecosystem resilience: Investigating the interplay between safety criteria and ferry employee's perceptions to address climate change impacts
Environ Res. 2023 Sep 5:117074. doi: 10.1016/j.envres.2023.117074. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTCoastal ecosystems play an important part in mitigating the effects of climate change. Coastal ecosystems are becoming more susceptible to climate change impacts due to human activities and maritime accidents. The global shipping industry, especially in Southeast Asia, has witnessed numerous accidents, particularly involving passenger ferries, resulting in injuries and fatalities in recent years. In order to mitigate the impact of climate change on coastal ecosystems, this study aimed to evaluate the relationship between employ...

Providing End-of-Life Care in the Community: What Are the Challenges in Malaysia?
J Hosp Palliat Care. 2022 Sep 1;25(3):133-137. doi: 10.14475/jhpc.2022.25.3.133.ABSTRACTA 72-year-old woman with metastatic lung cancer to bone and brain and with left external iliac vein thrombosis was under the care of a community palliative care provider. She experienced an acute pain crisis due to acute limb ischemia of the left lower limb. Goals-of-care discussions were held with the patient and her family; she prioritized symptom control and end-of-life care at home. The family and patient were aware of her short prognosis. Her complex pain was managed by the community palliative team, and her family was empowered to...

Molecular characterization and phylogenetic analysis of avian influenza H3N8 virus isolated from imported waterfowl in Malaysia
Trop Biomed. 2023 Jun 1;40(2):220-235. doi: 10.47665/tb.40.2.014.ABSTRACTWild aquatic birds are natural reservoirs of influenza A viruses and H3 subtype is one of the most prevalent subtypes in waterfowl. Two H3N8 viruses of low pathogenic avian influenza (LPAI) were isolated via egg inoculation technique from the fecal swab specimens from imported barnacle goose and paradise shelduck in Veterinary Research Institute Ipoh, Malaysia. The full length of eight gene segments of the two viruses were amplified and sequenced with specific primers. The sequences were molecularly characterized, and the sequence identity were assess...
