Effectiveness of cefmetazole versus meropenem for invasive urinary tract infections caused by extended-spectrum β-lactamase-producing < em > Escherichia coli < /em >
Antimicrob Agents Chemother. 2023 Sep 13:e0051023. doi: 10.1128/aac.00510-23. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTCefmetazole is active against extended-spectrum β-lactamase-producing Escherichia coli (ESBLEC) and is a potential candidate for carbapenem-sparing therapy. This multicenter, observational study included patients hospitalized for invasive urinary tract infection due to ESBLEC between March 2020 and November 2021 at 10 facilities in Japan, for whom either cefmetazole or meropenem was initiated as a definitive therapy within 96 h of culture collection and continued for at least 3 d. Outcomes included clinical and micr...

Diverse applications and development of aptamer detection technology
Anal Sci. 2023 Sep 13. doi: 10.1007/s44211-023-00409-2. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTAptamers have received extensive attention in recent years because of their advantages of high specificity, high sensitivity and low immunogenicity. Aptamers can perform almost all functions of antibodies through the combination of spatial structure and target, which are called "chemical antibodies". At present, aptamers have been widely used in cell imaging, new drug development, disease treatment, microbial detection and other fields. Due to the diversity of modifications, aptamers can be combined with different detection technologies t...

Preabortion ultrasound - a patient perspective
CONCLUSION: Most women opting for medical abortion through telemedicine did not undergo a pre-abortion ultrasound scan. The main reason stated was that women did not find it necessary, lack of resources and privacy issues.PMID:37698511 | DOI:10.1080/13625187.2023.2249158

Relationship Between Asthma Control Status and Health-Related Quality of Life in Japan: A Cross-Sectional Mixed-Methods Study
CONCLUSIONS: Patients with NWC asthma had higher symptom burden and worse HRQoL than patients with WC asthma, despite ICS/LABA adherence. Cough burden correlated with HRQoL, suggesting cough may be one of the key markers to inform treatment strategy for patients with asthma.PMID:37698717 | DOI:10.1007/s12325-023-02660-5

Pre-treatment methods for stable oxygen and carbon isotope analyses of structural carbonates of bones in marine teleost fishes
CONCLUSIONS: Our results suggest that chemical cleaning methods used to prepare bone phosphate or collagen samples for isotope analyses are not suitable for structural carbonates. Physical cleaning is the appropriate pre-treatment method for analysing the isotopes of structural carbonates. Also, we emphasise that standardising the vertebral number is necessary to make δ13 C values comparable between specimens in the same species.PMID:37698155 | DOI:10.1002/rcm.9609

“The Greatest Scientist of All Time” says Scientific American. Who is it?
BY MIKE MAGEE When it comes to our earthly survival as a human species, words are often under-powered and off-the-mark. Clearer concepts, definitions and terms are required for clarity. Here are five terms that are useful and worth remembering: Planetary Boundaries Earth Systems Human Perturbations Planetary Scale Destabilization Holocene Epoch vs. Anthropogenic Epoch  These terms all tie back to a single source – a child of World War II, only seven when his home in Amsterdam was overrun by Nazis. His father was a waiter, his mother a cook in a local hospital. He’d later recall with a sh...
