The Association Between Self-Reported Anxiety and Retention in Opioid Agonist Therapy: Findings From a Canadian Pragmatic Trial
CONCLUSIONS: Baseline anxiety severity did not significantly impact retention in OAT for adults with POUD, and there was no significant effect modification by OAT type. However, the overall retention rates were low, highlighting the need to develop new strategies to minimize the risk of attrition from treatment.CLINICAL TRIAL REGISTRATION: This study was registered in ClinicalTrials.gov (NCT03033732).PMID:37697811 | DOI:10.1177/07067437231194385

A novel cuproptosis-related gene prognostic signature in colon adenocarcinoma
This study plans to establish a survival prognosis model for colon adenocarcinoma (COAD) patients based on cuproptosis-related genes (CRGs). We investigated the genetic alterations of CRGs in COAD based on The Cancer Genome Atlas database and validated in the GSE41328 dataset. Our results showed that LIPT1, PDHA1, GLS, and CDKN2A had significantly higher expression in COAD tissues than in normal tissues, while FDX1, DLD, and MTF1 had significantly lower expression in COAD tissues than in normal tissues (|(log2(fold change))| > 2, p < 0.05). DLD (hazard ratio (HR): 0.658; 95% confidence interval (CI): 0.445, 0.974; p ...

“The Greatest Scientist of All Time” says Scientific American. Who is it?
BY MIKE MAGEE When it comes to our earthly survival as a human species, words are often under-powered and off-the-mark. Clearer concepts, definitions and terms are required for clarity. Here are five terms that are useful and worth remembering: Planetary Boundaries Earth Systems Human Perturbations Planetary Scale Destabilization Holocene Epoch vs. Anthropogenic Epoch  These terms all tie back to a single source – a child of World War II, only seven when his home in Amsterdam was overrun by Nazis. His father was a waiter, his mother a cook in a local hospital. He’d later recall with a sh...

A model to predict level of adherence to prehabilitation in older adults with frailty having cancer surgery
CONCLUSION: A prespecified multivariable model may help to explain a modest degree of variation in prehabilitation adherence in older people with frailty. While this model is an important step toward personalizing prehabilitation support, this study was limited by a small sample size and future research is needed to better understand personalized prediction of prehabilitation adherence in older people with frailty.PMID:37697099 | DOI:10.1007/s12630-023-02559-3

Effect of Metformin Versus Placebo on New Primary Cancers in Canadian Cancer Trials Group MA.32: A Secondary Analysis of a Phase III Randomized Double-Blind Trial in Early Breast Cancer
J Clin Oncol. 2023 Sep 11:JCO2300296. doi: 10.1200/JCO.23.00296. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTClinical trials frequently include multiple end points that mature at different times. The initial report, typically based on the primary end point, may be published when key planned coprimary or secondary analyses are not yet available. Clinical trial updates provide an opportunity to disseminate additional results from studies, published in JCO or elsewhere, for which the primary end point has already been reported.Metformin has been associated with lower cancer risk in epidemiologic and preclinical research. In the MA.32 rando...

Vaccine Effectiveness of non-adjuvanted and adjuvanted trivalent inactivated influenza vaccines in the prevention of influenza-related hospitalization in older adults: A pooled analysis from the Serious Outcomes Surveillance (SOS) Network of the Canadian Immunization Research Network (CIRN)
CONCLUSIONS: Adjusting for frailty, aTIV showed statistically significantly better protection than naTIV against influenza-associated hospitalizations in older adults. In future studies, it is important to consider frailty as a significant confounder of VE.PMID:37696717 | DOI:10.1016/j.vaccine.2023.08.070

The Pan-American NanoBiophotonics Team
Angew Chem Int Ed Engl. 2023 Sep 11:e202312611. doi: 10.1002/anie.202312611. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTThis invited Team Profile was created by the Zheng Lab (UHN, Toronto, Canada), the CEPOF BioPhotonics Lab (USP, São Carlos, Brazil), and the BiOPI Lab (UC Chile, Santiago, Chile). They recently published an article on an Indocyanine Green (ICG) nanoemulsion in which 100 % dimerization and J-aggregation occurs spontaneously afford a nanostructured shell of dimeric ICG (Nano-dICG). This material demonstrates superior photothermal conversion efficiency, photostability, and structure stability over ICG, giving an ultra-s...

Comparison of the novel membrane-based carbon dioxide filter memsorb ™ with a chemical granulate absorbent using a high-fidelity lung simulator: a prospective randomized in vitro trial
DISCUSSION: CO2 was successfully removed from the anesthesia circuit. FICO2 was significantly higher with memsorb throughout the observation period. Nevertheless, the clinical impact of these observations remains unclear. Further clinical trials are required to determine the utility of the novel device.PMID:37697100 | DOI:10.1007/s12630-023-02563-7
