Point-of-care testing of HbA1c levels in community settings for people with established diabetes or people at risk of developing type 2 diabetes: a systematic review and meta-analysis protocol
Introduction Diabetes mellitus has increased in prevalence worldwide and is causing an increasing burden on health services. The best patient outcomes occur with early diagnosis to prevent health complications. Glycated haemoglobin (HbA1c) is used to assess glycaemic control over 3–6 months and inform clinical management. Point-of-care (POC) HbA1c devices can be used in community settings, independent of clinical laboratories. This review aims to evaluate how these devices have been implemented in community settings and what patient outcomes have been documented. Methods and analysis This protocol follows the Prefer...

Applying dyadic digital psychological interventions for reducing caregiver burden in the illness context: a systematic review and a meta-analysis protocol
Introduction Providing informal care to one’s romantic partner who is ill may become a highly distressing and demanding task. Based on the innovative dyadic coping model, several support interventions have been developed to alleviate informal caregivers’ burden, including both caregivers’ and care receivers’ needs. Considering the unique challenges characterising the caregiving phenomenon, such as geographical barriers and time restrictions, digital solutions should be considered. However, there is a lack of research examining the effectiveness of dyadic digital solutions. Thus, this review aims to ...

Diagnostic performance of deep learning in infectious keratitis: a systematic review and meta-analysis protocol
Introduction Infectious keratitis (IK) represents the fifth-leading cause of blindness worldwide. A delay in diagnosis is often a major factor in progression to irreversible visual impairment and/or blindness from IK. The diagnostic challenge is further compounded by low microbiological culture yield, long turnaround time, poorly differentiated clinical features and polymicrobial infections. In recent years, deep learning (DL), a subfield of artificial intelligence, has rapidly emerged as a promising tool in assisting automated medical diagnosis, clinical triage and decision-making, and improving workflow efficiency in hea...

Evaluation of health utility in trial-based cost-utility analyses for major cardiovascular disease: protocol for a systematic review
Introduction The global incidence of cardiovascular disease (CVD) is high, and the medical costs associated with its management have been increasing. Cost–utility analyses (CUAs) are essential for understanding the value of healthcare interventions and for decision-making. A majority of the CUAs for CVD are model based and have cited health utilities from previously published data; standard health utilities for the CUAs of CVD have not been established yet. Thus, we aim to identify the standard utilities according to the patients’ condition and disease severity in patients with major CVDs. Methods and analysis...

Alcohol and substance dependence in the United Arab Emirates: a scoping review protocol
Introduction Despite cultural, religious and legal constraints, alcohol and drug abuse is rising in the United Arab Emirates (UAE). Therefore, we aim to produce a scoping review to summarise available scientific literature on alcohol and substance dependence (ASD) in all ethnic and religious groups in the UAE to inform future scientific inquiries. Methods and analysis Social work faculty from the UAE University will conduct the scoping review between March 2023 and February 2024. Drawing on the participants, concept, context (PCC) framework, the following review question was developed: What can be learnt from a review of ...

Evaluation of the reported data linkage process and associated quality issues for linked routinely collected healthcare data in multimorbidity research: a systematic methodology review
Conclusions The linkage process was poorly reported in multimorbidity research, even though this might introduce bias and potentially lead to inaccurate inferences drawn from the results. There is therefore a need for increased awareness of linkage bias and transparency of the linkage processes, which could be achieved through better adherence to reporting guidelines. PROSPERO registration number CRD42021243188.

Pregnancy exposure registries for drugs and vaccines in low-income and middle-income countries: scoping review protocol
Introduction Data regarding the safety of drugs and vaccines in pregnant women are typically unavailable before licensure. Pregnancy exposure registries (PERs) are an important source of postmarketing safety information. PERs in low-income and middle-income countries (LMICs) are uncommon but can provide valuable safety data regarding their distinct contexts and will become more relevant as the introduction and use of new drugs and vaccines in pregnancy increase worldwide. Strategies to support PERs in LMICs must be based on a better understanding of their current status. We developed a scoping review protocol to assess the...

Value of retrograde pulmonary vein perfusion combined with pulmonary artery thrombectomy in acute pulmonary embolism: a protocol for a systematic review and meta-analysis
Introduction Acute pulmonary embolism is a serious cardiovascular disease with high mortality. Surgery is an important therapeutic means. The traditional surgical method is pulmonary artery embolectomy with cardiopulmonary bypass, but there is a certain recurrence rate after surgery. Some scholars use retrograde pulmonary vein perfusion as an adjunct to conventional pulmonary artery embolectomy. However, whether this method can be used safely for acute pulmonary embolism and its long-term effects remains unclear. Therefore, we plan to conduct a systematic review and meta-analysis to investigate whether retrograde pulmonary...

Reporting of adverse events associated with spinal manipulation in randomised clinical trials: an updated systematic review
Conclusions While the current level of reporting of adverse events associated with spinal manipulation in RCTs has increased since our 2016 publication on the same topic, the level remains low and inconsistent with established standards. As such, it is imperative for authors, journal editors and administrators of clinical trial registries to ensure there is more balanced reporting of both benefits and harms in RCTs involving spinal manipulation.
