Amino Acid Profile in 18 Patients with Rheumatic Diseases Treated with Glucocorticoids and BCAAs
J Nutr Sci Vitaminol (Tokyo). 2021;67(3):180-188. doi: 10.3177/jnsv.67.180.ABSTRACTThe administration of glucocorticoids to patients with rheumatic diseases often results in glucocorticoid-induced myopathy. We previously found that administration of branched-chain amino acids (BCAA) to such patients improves the loss of skeletal muscle, however, their individual differences were often observed. The present study, therefore, aims to identify specific parameters associated with BCAA-induced increases in skeletal muscle mass. Eighteen patients with rheumatic diseases treated with prednisolone were randomly assigned to receive...

Kaposi's sarcoma associated with adult dermatomyositis
We report a case involving a 73-year-old Saudi man diagnosed with dermatomyositis who subsequently developed Kaposi's sarcoma one month later. He had difficulty in rising from a chair and increased leg weakness while climbing stairs or walking. He was unable to comb his hair and had greater dysphagia with liquids than with solid foods. Laboratory tests showed elevated liver enzyme and creatine kinase levels. Right quadriceps muscle biopsy indicated inflammatory myopathy, which was consistent with adult dermatomyositis. We administered 1-g/day methylprednisolone intravenously for 3 days, followed by 60-mg oral prednisolone ...
