Naturopathy in Australia: Where are we now? Where are we heading?
Abstract Naturopathy is the general practice of natural therapies. It emphasizes prevention, treatment, and promotion of optimal health through therapeutic modalities which encourage the self-healing process of the body. Formalized in the 19th century by the hydrotherapy and nature cure movement in Austria and Germany, naturopathy was introduced to Australia at the turn of the 20th century. It became popular since the 1970s due to social and cultural change characterized by the post-modern philosophy, as well as government policies highlighting individual responsibility and freedom of choice. Naturopathy is one of...

Utilization and perceived benefits of homeopathy and herbal therapies in U.S. adults: Implications of patient-centered care.
Abstract We evaluated reasons for and perceived benefits of using homeopathic and herbal therapies in U.S. adults. Data were collected from the 2012 National Health Interview Survey, which represents non-institutionalized U.S. adults (n = 33,167 unweighted). In the past 12 months, 18.6% (41.95 million) of U.S. adults reported using either homeopathy and/or herbal therapies. Among these users, 34.8% and 5.1% used them for wellness only and treatment only, respectively. 60.1% reported using homeopathic and herbal therapies for a combination of both treatment and wellness. In four out of seven self-reported perceiv...

This study compared traditional Indian medicine (TIM) and traditional Korean medicine (TKM) basing on data obtained from peer reviewed articles, respective government institutional reports and World Health Organization reports. Complementary medicine use among general internal medicine inpatients in a Swiss university hospital
ConclusionOne‐third of hospitalised patients used CM 2 months before hospitalisation and one‐tenth during hospital stay. CM use is seldom queried by hospital staff; better assessment of CM use among hospitalised patients could prevent potential adverse events or interactions.

Influence of Diet in Multiple Sclerosis: A Systematic Review
Nutrition is considered to be a possible factor in the pathogenesis of the neurological disease multiple sclerosis (MS). Nutrition intervention studies suggest that diet may be considered as a complementary treatment to control the progression of the disease; a systematic review of the literature on the influence of diet on MS was therefore conducted. The literature search was conducted by using Medlars Online International Literature (MEDLINE) via PubMed and Scopus. Forty-seven articles met the inclusion criteria. The reviewed articles assessed the relations between macro- and micronutrient intakes and MS incidence. The p...

Use of non-conventional medicine two years after cancer diagnosis in France: evidence from the VICAN survey
ConclusionThis is the first study on NCM use 2  years after cancer diagnosis in France. In nearly half of the NCM users, cancer diagnosis was one of the main factors which incited patients to use NCM. Apart from the NCM users’ socioeconomic profile, the present results show that impaired health was a decisive factor: opting for unconventional approaches was therefore a pragmatic response to needs which conventional medicine fails to meet during the course of the disease.Implications for Cancer SurvivorsBetter information of patients and caregivers is needed to allow access to these therapies to a larger population of survivors.

Patient perceptions of clinical care in complementary medicine: A systematic review of the consultation experience

CM use amongst the general population has been identified as both prevalent and consistently increasing on an international level [4,5], including patients with chronic health conditions [6,7]. It has also been asserted that the integration of CM consultations alongside the provision of conventional primary health-care services can enhance the qu...
