USPSTF-recommended screening leads to less cancer burden
Increasing use of recommended screening strategies could reduce the U.S. cancer burden, according to research published November 22 in JAMA Network Open.
A team led by Amy Knudsen, PhD, from Massachusetts General Hospital in Boston found an increase of 10 percentage points in the uptake of lung, colorectal, breast, and cervical cancer screening at their respective starting ages as recommended by the U.S. Preventive Services Task Force (USPSTF) led to decreased cancer deaths. It highlighted that this could help the U.S. achieve the Cancer Moonshot initiative’s goals.

American Society for Colposcopy and Cervical Pathology discusses updated American Cancer Society guidelines on cervical cancer screening
(Wolters Kluwer Health) Last year, the American Cancer Society (ACS) issued an updated set of guidelines for cervical cancer screening - emphasizing the shift toward screening with primary human papillomavirus (HPV) testing. While the ACS recommendation accounts for a transition period to implement primary HPV screening, additional factors should be considered to operationalize these guidelines, according to a special white paper in the July issue of the Journal of Lower Genital Tract Disease (JLGTD), official journal of ASCCP. MobileODT said last week that it is implementing a new artificial intelligence algorithm in its EVA system Colposcope that it claims can detect cervical cancer more effectively than existing testing.
The new technology, known as Automated Visual Evaluation, has been validated by the National Cancer Institute and the National Library of Medicine, the Israel-based company said, and is able to identify problematic lesions with greater reliability than traditional Pap Cytology testing.

Dysis Medical raises $25m
Dysis Medical said yesterday it raised $25 million (GBP £18 million) in a new round to help support its Dysis colposcope used for cervical cancer screenings.
The Dysis colposcope uses both optical imaging and software to scan the cervix to improve cervical cancer screening procedures, the company said.
Funds in the round will help support expansion into the US, across the U.K. and in “other key territories,” the Edinburgh, Scotland-based company said. Funds may also be used to support strategic R&D.
