Not quite to plan, wound infection after hysterectomy – Elizabeth ’ s story
I am 66 and underwent a laparoscopically assisted vaginal hysterectomy (ovaries also removed) and extended vaginal cuff procedure due to VAIN and several dodgy smear results which colposcopy didn’t sort out. All did not quite go according to plan as I ended up with a wound infection and I hope my story will help anyone who feels unfit to leave hospital have the strength to argue their case better than I did. I feel that being discharged too early on 2 occasions caused my problems to be worse than they could have been and therefore made my recovery time longer. My hysterectomy was elective and I don’t at all reg...

Physicians evaluate new device to test for cervical cancer
(University of California - Riverside) When a woman has an abnormal pap smear she usually undergoes colposcopy. Typically a metal instrument is used to obtain a small sampling of cells inside the cervix--an oftentimes painful procedure for the patient. A clinical faculty member in the UC Riverside School of Medicine and colleagues have tested an alternative device called fabric-based endocervical curettage. This less painful device had significantly fewer 'inadequate' specimens--meaning, patients didn't need to return for repeat biopsies. (Source: EurekAlert! - Social and Behavioral Science)

New tech promises easier cervical cancer screening
(Duke University) Duke University researchers have developed a handheld device for cervical cancer screening that promises to do away with uncomfortable speculums and high-cost colposcopes. If widely adopted, women might even self-screen, transforming screening and cure rates in low-income regions where cervical cancer is most prevalent. (Source: EurekAlert! - Medicine and Health)

Listen To This Woman's Emotional Testimony In Support Of Planned Parenthood
At a town hall meeting in Fairview, Tn. on Tuesday, one woman gave an emotional plea to her Congresswoman about why Planned Parenthood is an essential health care institution. “Planned Parenthood saved my life,” the woman said through tears, to Republican Rep. Marsha Blackburn, whose town hall meeting was filled with constituents opposed to Blackburn’s support of phasing out the ACA, among other contentious topics, like her support for education secretary Betsy DeVos.  The young woman continued:  I was a college student, I was a sophomore, I was uninsured, my parents were undocumented, I w...

Testing for HPV types 16 and 18 may better inform referral to colposcopy
(American College of Physicians) Testing for HPV types 16 and 18 in women with minor cervical lesions may be useful as a second triage after high-risk HPV testing to determine which patients should go on to colposcopy. The results of a systematic review and meta-analysis are published in Annals of Internal Medicine. (Source: EurekAlert! - Cancer)

Cervical screening every 10 years for healthy women is 'safe'
Conclusion This long-term follow-up of women involved in the POBASCAM randomised controlled trial aimed to assess the risk of extending screening intervals to more than five years for HPV-based cervical screening programmes. The study found that in women who were HPV negative, the long-term incidence of cervical cancer and abnormal cells was low. The research team believes these findings mean the interval between cervical screening tests can be increased to more than five years for women over the age of 40. This study was well designed, and included a large number of women with similar dropout rates between study arms. ...

My life leading to hysterectomy – Lucy ’ s story
So I’ve decided to write about my ‘journey’….. I hate how that sounds!!….OK I’ll call it my experiences. Now I’m happy I’ve renamed it my ‘experiences’ I can start this. I am 38 years old, 23 years ago I was told I have PCOS (polycystic ovarian syndrome). This was following 3 years of erratic, heavy, painful, periods. I was prescribed the combination pill to regulate my cycle and told if I wanted babies I’d likely need fertility treatment. Fast forward a couple of years…… I was still suffering heavy painful periods, only now they were regular! I made the decision to stop t...
