Epithelial inflammasomes, gasdermins, and mucosal inflammation - Lessons from Salmonella and Shigella infected mice
Semin Immunol. 2023 Aug 8;70:101812. doi: 10.1016/j.smim.2023.101812. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTBesides its crucial function in nutrient absorbance and as barrier against the microbiota, the gut epithelium is essential for sensing pathogenic insults and mounting of an appropriate early immune response. In mice, the activation of the canonical NAIP/NLRC4 inflammasome is critical for the defense against enterobacterial infections. Activation of the NAIP/NLRC4 inflammasome triggers the extrusion of infected intestinal epithelial cells (IEC) into the gut lumen, concomitant with inflammasome-mediated lytic cell death. The m...

Five years of caplacizumab - Lessons learned and remaining controversies in immune-mediated thrombotic thrombocytopenic purpura
J Thromb Haemost. 2023 Aug 8:S1538-7836(23)00591-3. doi: 10.1016/j.jtha.2023.07.027. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTImmune-mediated thrombotic thrombocytopenic purpura (iTTP) is a rare hematologic disease caused by autoantibodies against ADAMTS13 that trigger a microangiopathic hemolytic anemia. Therapeutic plasma exchange and glucocorticoids have been the mainstay of treatment for the past 30 years. In 2019, caplacizumab was approved as an addition to this regimen for the acute treatment of iTTP. Randomized controlled trials and real-world evidence have shown that caplacizumab reduces the time to platelet count normalizati...

Learning from history of natural disasters in the Sahel: a comprehensive analysis and lessons for future resilience
This study investigates the extent of damage caused by natural disasters from one of the most widely used databases-EM-DAT-with a sample size of 16 Sahelian countries over the period 1960-2020. These countries have been divided into three regions: Western Africa Sahel (WAS), Central Africa Sahel (CAS), and Eastern Africa Sahel (EAS). The analyses encompass four categories of natural hazards, namely, biological, climatological, hydrological, and meteorological. We used descriptive and test statistics to summarize the natural disaster records. Through this approach, we explore tendencies to identify the most frequently repor...

The evolution of technical prerequisites and local boundary conditions for optimization of mitral valve interventions-Emphasis on skills development and institutional risk performance
Front Cardiovasc Med. 2023 Jul 21;10:1101337. doi: 10.3389/fcvm.2023.1101337. eCollection 2023.ABSTRACTThis viewpoint report describes how the evolution of transcatheter mitral valve intervention (TMVI) is influenced by lessons learned from three evolutionary tracks: (1) the development of treatment from mitral valve surgery (MVS) to transcutaneous procedures; (2) the evolution of biomedical engineering for research and development resulting in predictable and safe clinical use; (3) the adaptation to local conditions, impact of transcatheter aortic valve replacement (TAVR) experience and creation of infrastructure for skil...

Tracking emergency response actions during COVID-19 leads to development of an innovative public health evaluation tool
Can J Public Health. 2023 Aug 7. doi: 10.17269/s41997-023-00811-3. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTSETTING: Early in the pandemic, KFL&A Public Health needed a way to capture, organize, and display COVID-19-related events to be accountable for and evaluate our actions.INTERVENTION: We used accessible software (Microsoft Office 365 suite, Microsoft PowerBI) to develop a data collection and visualization system. The Canadian Institute for Health Information (CIHI) developed a timeline and categorization approach for provincial and national COVID-related interventions, which was used to develop a regional version for local ...
