Vitamin A biomarkers were associated with AGP and CRP over the course of a human norovirus challenge infection
Br J Nutr. 2023 Sep 11:1-19. doi: 10.1017/S0007114523002076. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTRetinol binding protein (RBP) is used as a proxy for retinol in population-based assessments of vitamin A deficiency (VAD) for cost-effectiveness and feasibility. When the cutoff of <0.7 mol/L for retinol is applied to RBP to define VAD, an equivalence of the two biomarkers is assumed. Evidence suggests that the relationship between retinol and RBP is not 1:1, particularly in populations with a high burden of infection or inflammation. The goal of this analysis was to longitudinally evaluate the retinol:RBP ratio over one month of...

How important is food structure when cats eat mice?
Br J Nutr. 2023 Sep 11:1-37. doi: 10.1017/S0007114523002039. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTFeeding whole prey to felids has shown to benefit their gastrointestinal health. Whether this effect is caused by the chemical or physical nature of whole prey is unknown. Fifteen domestic cats, as a model for strict carnivores, were either fed minced mice (MM) or whole mice (WM), to determine the effect of food structure on digestibility, mean urinary excretion time of 15N, intestinal microbial activity and fermentation products. Faeces samples were collected after feeding all cats a commercially available extruded diet (EXT) for 10...

Replacing red and processed meat with lean or fatty fish and all-cause and cause specific mortality in Norwegian women. The Norwegian Women and Cancer Study (NOWAC): a prospective cohort study
This study investigated the replacement of red and processed meat with fish in relation to mortality. Of 83 304 women in the NOWAC Study, 9 420 died during a median of 21.0 years of follow-up. The hazard ratios (HRs) for mortality were estimated using Cox Proportional Hazards regression with analyses stratified on red and processed meat intake due to non-linearity. Higher processed meat (>30 grams/day), red and processed meat (>50 grams/day), and fatty fish consumption were associated with higher mortality, while red meat and lean fish consumption were neutral or beneficial. Among women with higher processed meat int...

Dairy products and brain structure in French older adults
Br J Nutr. 2023 Sep 11:1-26. doi: 10.1017/S0007114523001551. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTAmong food groups with putative benefits for brain structures, dairy products (DPs) have been poorly studied. The sample included participants without dementia from the ancillary brain imaging study of the Three-City cohort who were aged 65+ years, had their DPs intake assessed with a Food Frequency Questionnaire at baseline and underwent an anatomical scan 3 years (n=343) or 9 years (n=195) after completing the dietary survey. The frequencies of consumption of total DPs, milk and cheese were not associated with brain structure. Comp...

Within your rights: Dissociating wrongness and permissibility in moral judgement
Br J Soc Psychol. 2023 Sep 11. doi: 10.1111/bjso.12680. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTAre we ever morally permitted to do what is morally wrong? It seems intuitive that we are, but evidence for dissociations among judgement of permissibility and wrongness is relatively scarce. Across four experiments (N = 1438), we show that people judge that some behaviours can be morally wrong and permissible. The dissociations arise because these judgements track different morally relevant aspects of everyday moral encounters. Judgements of individual rights predicted permissibility but not wrongness, while character assessment predicte...

The role of group memberships and school identification on student well-being
Br J Soc Psychol. 2023 Sep 11. doi: 10.1111/bjso.12685. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTThere are widespread concerns about a decline in young people's mental health. One promising direction to address this issue involves group memberships and social identity processes. Despite progress, there are several issues in current theory and research including (1) whether the number of groups to which an individual belongs is related to more positive well-being, (2) better understanding the relationship between group memberships and social identification processes and (3) the need for more comprehensive longitudinal methods. The goa...

Relationship between urinary potassium excretion, serum potassium levels, and cardiac injury in non-dialysis chronic kidney disease: KoreaN cohort study for Outcome in patients With Chronic Kidney Disease (KNOW-CKD)
Br J Nutr. 2023 Sep 11:1-21. doi: 10.1017/S0007114523002064. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTAlthough the cardiovascular benefits of an increased urinary potassium excretion have been suggested, little is known about the potential cardiac association of urinary potassium excretion in patients with chronic kidney disease (CKD). In addition, whether the cardiac association of urinary potassium excretion was mediated by serum potassium levels has not been studied yet. We reviewed the data of 1,633 patients from a large-scale multicenter prospective Korean study (2011-2016). Spot urinary potassium to creatinine ratio was used as...

Association of dietary and lifestyle inflammation score with type 2 diabetes mellitus and cardiometabolic risk factors in Iranian adults: Sabzevar Persian Cohort Study
In this study, we identified and recruited 619 patients with T2DM and 2113 without T2DM from 35-75 years old men and women in the baseline phase of the Sabzevar Persian Cohort Study. Using a validated 115-item semi-quantitative food frequency questionnaire, we calculated a 19-component DIS and a 3-component LIS weighted by circulating inflammation biomarkers. The DIS, LIS, and DLIS associations with diabetes were assessed by multivariable logistic regression analysis. Participants had a mean age of 48.29±8.53 (without T2DM: 47.66±8.42; T2DM: 50.44±8.57). Individuals in the highest compared to the lowest tertiles of DLIS...

Promoting societal resilience during the COVID-19 pandemic: a multi-country analysis of public health strategies
CONCLUSIONS: The COVID-19 pandemic highlighted the importance of Public Health in developing proper strategies and utilizing digitals tools to counteract infodemic and spread relevant information. Healthcare workers should improve their communication skills to face future epidemics and be trusted by the population. Social media and digital platforms should be studied and used effectively in times of emergency.PMID:37695174 | DOI:10.23750/abm.v94iS3.14562

Innovative COVID-19 diagnostics and testing strategies in Italy, Denmark, UK, Israel and Sweden: a comparative analysis including tests, incidence and mortality
In this study, we analyzed the use of these techniques in five countries (i.e. Italy, Denmark, the United Kingdom, Sweden, and Israel) based on their specific national testing and contact tracing strategies. We also examined the number of tests performed per week, the positivity rate of tests, and the mortality rate in these populations during the same time periods. These countries were chosen based on the directives of the consortium involved in the CORONADX project.PMID:37695173 | DOI:10.23750/abm.v94iS3.14565

A Recent Digitalization in Recycling Industry Attaining Ecological Sustainability: A Comprehensive Outlook and Future Trend
Environ Sci Pollut Res Int. 2023 Sep 11. doi: 10.1007/s11356-023-29537-y. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTThe management of waste through dual way of recycling (i-e offline and online) is assumed to have a key role in attaining ecological sustainability and enabling circular practices. The research on online recycling is gaining evolution in recent age. Prior literature on the current research theme has failed to provide a comprehensive outlook and future trend. Therefore, the current research intends to elaborate the current research scenario linked with online recycling by critically scrutinizing the prior research over th...
