Surgical treatment of nasal polyposis: A comparison between cutting forceps and microdebrider.
CONCLUSION: The manual instrument allowed for a significantly lower recurrence incidence but yielded a higher rate of synechia formation compared with the microdebrider. Only asthma was significantly associated with a poorer clinical outcome, and gender, age, allergy, and eosinophilia did not affect the surgical prognosis. PMID: 24274215 [PubMed - in process]

Intestinal lymphoid nodular hyperplasia in children: The relationship to food allergy
ConclusionsIntestinal LNH should be considered a benign finding in children without red flags, because the symptoms are largely self‐limiting. The use of mesalamine or elimination diet does not modify the clinical outcome compared to symptomatic therapy. The presence of food allergy was not predicted by allergy skin testing and was found in a minority of patients.

IgE‐associated food allergy alters the presentation of pediatric eosinophilic esophagitis
Conclusions & Clinical RelevanceImmediate hypersensitivity is common in children with EoE, and identifies a population of EoE patients with distinct clinical characteristics. Our study describes a subtype of EoE in which IgE‐mediated food allergy may impact the presentation of pediatric EoE.This article is protected by copyright. All rights reserved.

Sinonasal polyposis in the elderly.
CONCLUSION: The present preliminary investigation found a lower recurrence rate after functional endoscopic sinus surgery for CRSwNP in elderly patients than in young adult patients. Further investigations on larger, prospective series are mandatory to support the hypothesis that, although eosinophilic-type CRSwNP is generally considered a variant at high risk of recurrence and that probably warrants stricter postoperative follow-up and adjuvant postoperative medical treatment, these considerations could not be applied to elderly patients. The potential role of hyaluronic acid in postoperative radiofrequency surgery for chronic inferior turbinate hypertrophy.
CONCLUSION: The results of this prospective study suggest a role of HA as a supportive treatment for faster improvement of nasal respiration, also minimizing patients' discomfort in postoperative nasal surgery, promoting nasal mucosa healing in postoperative RFVTR for inferior turbinate hypertrophy. Systemic effects and safety of triamcinolone-impregnated nasal packing after endoscopic sinus surgery: A randomized, double-blinded, placebo-controlled study.
CONCLUSIONS: TA-impregnated nasal dressings suppress serum cortisol levels during the early postoperative period. This systemic effect was recovered gradually and normalized 10 days after the operation. PMID: 24119605 [PubMed - as supplied by publisher]

Serum 25-hydroxyvitamin D levels are lower in chronic rhinosinusitis with nasal polyposis and are correlated with disease severity in Taiwanese patients.
CONCLUSION: A significantly lower vitamin D level was found in a group of Taiwanese CRSwNP patients, which revealed an association with greater nasal polyp size. Serum vitamin D levels could be added to the routine workup of patients suffering from CRS and these data could be used to potentially help determine the disease severity. Azithromycin add-on therapy in high-risk postendoscopic sinus surgery patients failing corticosteroid irrigations: A clinical practice audit.
CONCLUSION: A significant subgroup of high-risk patients showing disease recurrence after ESS despite topical corticosteroid therapy may respond to the addition of AZI as part of their therapy. These findings suggest that topical steroid-unresponsive CRS may represent a distinct entity and that alternate anti-inflammatory agents may be required for optimal management. Postoperative irrigation therapy after sinonasal tumor surgery.
CONCLUSION: Although corticosteroid irrigations have become routine for managing inflammatory sinus disease at our center, their use after tumor surgery does not appear to be warranted. The inflammatory healing process after tumor surgery differs from CRS inflammation and may explain the observed findings. PMID: 24717955 [PubMed - in process]

Evaluation of olfaction in patients with pemphigus vulgaris.
CONCLUSION: PV causes olfactory dysfunction leading to eventual hyposmia that decreases quality of life. We suggest that olfactory testing be included in PV evaluation for the diagnosis and treatment of hyposmia, when necessary. PMID: 24717939 [PubMed - in process]

Differences in initial immunoprofiles between recurrent and nonrecurrent chronic rhinosinusitis with nasal polyps.
In this study we investigate the cytokine profile in CRSwNPs that underwent FESS for the first time and recurrent CRSwNPs. METHODS: Tissue samples (n = 21) of CRSwNP patients with no recurrence after the first surgery were randomly selected out of 131 primary FESS surgeries and compared with tissue samples (n = 15) from patients who had a first and second surgery because of recurrence. Interleukin (IL)-1beta, IgE, specific IgE, IL-5, interferon (IFN) gamma, IL-6, IL-17, transforming growth factor (TGF) beta1, and myeloperoxidase were measured on tissue homogenates. RESULTS: Levels of IgE, specific IgE to Staphylo...

Mast cell density in cardio-esophageal mucosa.
In this study we wanted to obtain an estimate of mast cell density in this region and compare it with mast cell density in antrum. From April 2007 till March 2010, we chose children (<14 years old) who underwent upper endoscopy and from whom the taken biopsy was stated to be from lower third of esophagus, but in microscopic examination either cardio- esophageal mucosa or only cardiac mucosa was seen. Mast cells were counted by Giemsa stain at ×1000 magnification in 10 fields. 71 children (<14 years old) were included in this study of which, 63.4% (n=45) were female and 36.6% (n=26) were male. The mean age of patient...

A comparative and descriptive study of asthma in chronic rhinosinusitis with nasal polyps.
CONCLUSION: Compared with previous studies, we found a very high prevalence of asthma and, frequently, asthma was undiagnosed. Furthermore, CRSwNPs was associated with chronic bronchitis and, in those with asthma, lower airway obstruction. These results call for a closer collaboration between otorhinolaryngology and respiratory medicine in relation to patients with CRSwNPs, in research as well as in clinical practice.
