Risk factors for severe anaphylaxis in the United States.
CONCLUSION: In this large contemporary cohort study, 11.6% of patients had severe anaphylaxis. Age of 65 years or older, medication as a trigger, and presence of comorbid conditions (specifically cardiac and lung disease) were associated with significantly higher odds of severe anaphylaxis. Additional studies examining risk factors for severe anaphylaxis are needed to define risk assessment strategies and establish a framework for management. PMID: 28958375 [PubMed - in process]

How often is sinus surgery performed for chronic rhinosinusitis with versus without nasal polyps?
CONCLUSION: Almost 30% of ESS were performed for CRSwNP, and these cases were, on average, more extensive, used more OR time, and more often used image guidance than surgeries for CRSsNP. The rate of surgery performed for CRSwNP varied based on geography, payer, and surgical volume, which indicted that patient selection impacted surgical management. Early Versus Late Computed Tomography and Nasal Endoscopy in the Diagnosis of Nasopharyngeal and Paranasal Sinus Malignancy.
CONCLUSIONS: Early NE or CT is associated with a higher likelihood of cancer diagnosis in elderly individuals with a diagnosis of CRS or AR. The clinical utility of this association is limited due to the low prevalence of these malignancies and lack of difference in disease stage and overall survival between diagnostic groups. Challenges in the Management of Hereditary Angioedema in Urban and Rural Settings: Results of a US Survey
CONCLUSION: Our findings illustrate the challenge of diagnosing HAE, especially HAE C1nl-INH, and the economic challenges of treatment, which can be compounded for those living in rural areas. We provide a call to action for addressing several of these real challenges.PMID:36918110 | DOI:10.1016/j.anai.2023.03.005

Outcomes of Emergency Department Anaphylaxis Visits from 2005 to 2014
Conclusions The increasing proportions of observation/inpatient admissions, intensive care unit admissions, and endotracheal intubations suggest an increase in anaphylaxis severity. Enhanced awareness of these trends among patients, practitioners, and the community is necessary to create effective strategies to prevent anaphylaxis and decrease associated adverse consequences.
