Food Allergy in At- Risk Adolescents with Asthma: A Key Area for Focus.
CONCLUSION: Food allergy is common among this cohort of asthmatic adolescents. While food allergy was not related to asthma symptom severity, food allergic adolescents had higher FeNo and more activity limitation, and the majority did not have epinephrine auto-injectors. A history of food allergy and lack of epinephrine autoinjector may increase near fatal outcomes in adolescents with asthma. Preventive measures in addition to standard asthma treatments are warranted for these teens. PMID: 32534023 [PubMed - as supplied by publisher]

Systematic review of professional liability when prescribing beta-lactams for patients with a known penicillin allergy.
CONCLUSION: The cases with published legal outcomes found limited professional liability for clinicians who prescribed either cephalosporins or carbapenems to a patient with a known penicillin allergy. These results may decrease the litigation fears of providers and risk managers within healthcare systems. PMID: 29551402 [PubMed - as supplied by publisher]

Drug allergy in older adults
Older adults have an increased risk of adverse drug reactions and negative effects associated with alternative antibiotic use. Although the number of antibiotic allergies reported increases with age, the characteristics and outcomes of older adults receiving drug allergy assessment are unknown.

Drug Allergy in Older Adults: A Study from the United States Drug Allergy Registry
CONCLUSION: Older adults represented a quarter of USDAR participants but were neither racially nor ethnically diverse and were generally healthy without considerable antibiotic need. Most older adults presented for antibiotic allergy assessments, the vast majority of which were disproved. Drug allergy assessments may be underutilized in the older adults who are most vulnerable to the harms of unconfirmed antibiotic allergy labels.PMID:37557950 | DOI:10.1016/j.anai.2023.07.024

Prevalence and Burden of Coconut Allergy in the United States
CONCLUSION: Roughly 1 in 260 Americans report symptoms consistent with an IgE-mediated allergy to coconut, although fewer than half of these individuals report receiving a physician diagnosis. Our data indicate that most individuals with reported coconut allergy meeting symptom-based criteria for convincingly IgE-mediated disease have comorbid food allergies, and for many patients, clinical management appears to be suboptimal.PMID:37625503 | DOI:10.1016/j.anai.2023.08.017

Food allergy guidance in the United States military: A  work group report from the American Academy of Allergy, Asthma & Immunology's Military Allergy and Immunology Assembly
A diagnosis of food allergy adversely affects one's ability to join or remain in the military. Inadequate knowledge or misconceptions of current military-specific standards regarding food allergy and how these apply to enlistment, induction, and retention in the US military can lead potentially to inaccurate counseling because each military service has specific regulations that affect the evaluation and decision-making process. Recognizing this knowledge gap, the American Academy of Allergy, Asthma& Immunology's Military Allergy and Immunology Assembly established a work group that reviewed and summarized all aspects of mi...

Prevalence and Characteristics of Shellfish Allergy in the Pediatric Population of the United States
ConclusionThe epidemiology of SA in the US pediatric population shows crustacean allergy is more common than mollusk allergy. A disparity in SA children and epinephrine auto-injector carriage exists. Results from this study will lead to increased awareness of the need for detailed histories, specific diagnostic tests, and rescue epinephrine for anaphylaxis in US children with SA.
