House dust mite allergy and shrimp allergy: a complex interaction.
Conclusions. Shrimp allergy seems to occur uniquely in association with hypersensitivity to HDM allergens and tropomyosin is the main shrimp allergen but not a major one, at least in Italy. Along with tropomyosin-specific IgE levels, monosensitization to HDM seems to represent a risk factor for the development of shrimp allergy among HDM allergic patients. The oral food desensitization in the Italian allergy centres.
CONCLUSION: Although OFD may sometimes be successful and may be considered a valid alternative to an elimination diet, further randomized controlled trials are needed, in order to clarify some controversial points, such as the characteristics of the child undergoing OFD, and the methods of food preparation and administration. Moreover, further studies should further investigate OFD safety, efficacy and costs. PMID: 25951144 [PubMed - in process]

Cross-elicitation responses to 2-methoxymethyl-p-phenylenediamine in p-phenylenediamine highly allergic volunteers using allergy alert test: the Italian experience.
Conclusions. Me-PPD may offer a safer alternative for PPD-allergic patients with an absent or reduced elicitation response in the allergy alert test simulating hair dye use conditions. Even patients with strong patch test reactions, with appropriate selection by allergy alert test and counselling, may be able to tolerate hair dyeing with Me-PPD containing products. Comparison of the Performance of Skin Prick and ISAC Tests in the Diagnosis of Allergy.
Authors: Scala E, Villalta D, Meneguzzi G, Brusca I, Cecchi L Abstract Summary: The recent European Union and Italian regulations in the matter of in vivo test could strongly impact on current diagnostic approach, increasing the usage of in vitro tests in daily clinical practice. We evaluated 506 patients with both skin prick test and a microarray system (ImmunoCAP ISAC 112). The overall evaluation between ImmunoCAP® ISAC vs SPT showed a moderate agreement (k=0.509, 95% C.I. 0.480-0.540, SE: 0.016) considering both aeroallergens and food allergens. When we considered the concordant results (double-positive plus do...

Allergen immunotherapy: clinical and practical education of Italian trainees in allergy and clinical immunology schools.
Authors: Ridolo E, Incorvaia C, Senna GE, Montagni M, Olivieri E, Canonica GW Abstract We performed a survey, based on a questionnaire including 20 items, submitted anonymously to Italian trainees in Allergology and Clinical Immunology, in order to obtain information about their specific allergen immunotherapy (AIT) practices. The questionnaire was sent to 40 trainees, who had attended the last two years of the training course. Thirty-four subjects (mean age: 27 years, 65% females) adequately completed the survey. The answers to the questionnaire showed that only 60% of the training programs included lectures on AI...

Shrimp allergy beyond Tropomyosin in Italy: clinical relevance of Arginine Kinase, Sarcoplasmic calcium binding protein and Hemocyanin.
CONCLUSION: Shrimp arginine kinase and sarcoplasmic calcium-binding protein are minor allergens sensitizing only 10%-15% of Italian shrimp-allergic patients, but are clinically relevant. Hemocyanin is a clinically relevant high molecular weight shrimp allergen possibly cross-reacting to house dust mite. PMID: 25224947 [PubMed - indexed for MEDLINE]

Cross-elicitation responses to 2-methoxymethyl-p-phenylenediamine in p-phenylenediamine highly allergic volunteers using allergy alert test: the Italian experience.
Conclusion: Most SR during UR were mild with no need for adrenaline treatment. The honey bee venom and the severity of the anaphylaxis during the field sting were the only SR´s risk factors for systemic adverse reactions during the UR. PMID: 30702236 [PubMed - as supplied by publisher]

Galactose- α-1,3-galactose syndrome: an Italian survey.
Conclusions. α-Gal syndrome is present in Italy and beef is the most frequent offending food. In most cases symptoms were not severe. PMID: 29249134 [PubMed - in process]

Nickel allergy following European Union regulation in Denmark, Germany, Italy and the U.K.
ConclusionsThere has been a reduction in the prevalence of nickel allergy in young women, contemporaneous with the introduction of the nickel regulation. A reduction is also suggested in men in Germany and the U.K. A causative effect of the regulatory intervention is the most likely explanation.

Phleum pratense molecular pattern across Italy.
Conclusion. This study demonstrates that Phleum pratense sensitization is relevant in Italy, but there are significant geographical variations variations as far as pollen exposure and pattern of IgE reactivity to the considered allergen components are concerned. This information may have clinical relevance in managing patients allergic to grass pollen. PMID: 28752721 [PubMed - in process]

Preliminary Development of the Food Allergy Coping and Emotions Questionnaires for Children, Adolescents, and Young People: Qualitative Analysis of Data on IgE-Mediated Food Allergy from Five Countries
Conclusions Early-life experiences provide the foundation for later cognitions and behaviors. The expanded FACE developmental model is useful in explaining emotions and coping styles across different age groups and countries. These data will also be used to generate an age-specific bank of items for the development of 3 (age-specific self-report, and parent proxy) questionnaires to assess emotions and coping in food allergy. Findings provide insight into how particular styles of coping develop and vary from patient to patient and may also guide clinician-patient communication and the development of individualized management strategies.

Hymenoptera venom allergy among children in Italy: time for pediatricians to take action.
Abstract Hymenoptera venom allergy (HVA) is one of the most frequent causes of anaphylaxis following a bee, vespid or ant sting. Real-life data regarding the management of HVA in children are lacking. To address this unmet need, we carried out a survey defining the current management of HVA in children among pediatric allergists in Italy. Educational investments on the improvement of the management of pediatric patients with HVA are urgently needed, and our analysis represents a relevant instrument in targeting a roadmap with this aim. The time for pediatric allergists to take action has come, and a task force fro...

The role of mobile apps in allergic respiratory diseases: an Italian multicentre survey report.
Authors: Lombardi C, Bonini M, Passalacqua G, Mobile Apps Multicenter Italian Study Group Abstract Summary: We performed a multicentre survey about the role of mobile apps in allergic respiratory diseases. The main objective was to investigate the current use and usefulness of mobile phone apps in the management of allergic respiratory disease. An original questionnaire including 12 multiple-choice questions was administered to 360 participants (153 male and 207 female subjects). Of notice, 290 subjects owned a smartphone, 120 a personal computer and 68 a tablet (multiple answers were possible). 123 subjects report...
