Prenatal and infant exposure to acetaminophen and ibuprofen and the risk for wheeze and asthma in children
Several studies have reported an association between use of over-the-counter antipyretics during pregnancy or infancy and increased asthma risk. An important potential limitation of these observational studies is confounding by indication.

Over-the-Counter Medications in Pregnancy.
Abstract Many pregnant women take over-the-counter (OTC) medications despite the absence of randomized controlled trials to guide their use during pregnancy. Most data come from case-control and cohort studies. In 1979, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration began reviewing all prescription and OTC medications to develop risk categories for use in pregnancy. Most OTC medications taken during pregnancy are for allergy, respiratory, gastrointestinal, or skin conditions, as well as for general analgesia. Clinical and pathologic characteristics of intranasal abuse of combined opioid‐acetaminophen medications
ConclusionIntranasal COAM abuse causes nasal pain, tissue necrosis with potential septal and palatal perforation, and noninvasive fungal colonization. Antifungal therapy was of no benefit in the current series of patients. Current therapy should focus on recognition of the etiology of patients’ pathology and encourage abstinence from intranasal use of these drugs along with serial debridements.
