Clinical Characteristics and Economic Burden of Asthma in China: A Multicenter Retrospective Study
Iran J Allergy Asthma Immunol. 2023 Jun 16;22(3):290-298. doi: 10.18502/ijaai.v22i3.13057.ABSTRACTAsthma is a common chronic airway inflammation that produces a healthcare burden on the economy. We aim to obtain a better understanding of the clinical status and disease burden of patients with asthma in China. A retrospective study was carried out based on the computerized medical records in the Jinan Health Medical Big Data Platform between 2011 and 2019 (available data from 38 hospitals). The asthma severity of each patient was assessed retrospectively and categorized as mild, moderate, or severe according to Global Initi...

Association of Interleukin-2 Gene Polymorphism with Henoch-sch önlein Purpura Nephritis
Iran J Allergy Asthma Immunol. 2023 Jun 16;22(3):319-326. doi: 10.18502/ijaai.v22i3.13060.ABSTRACTHenoch-Schönlein purpura nephritis (HSPN) is a common vasculitis that mostly affects children, and previous studies have indicated that genetic factors may influence disease susceptibility. The aim of this study was to evaluate a possible association of three interleukin-2 (IL-2) gene polymorphisms (rs3136534, rs2069776, and rs2069762) with HSPN in the Chinese population. A total of 81 patients with HSPN and 200 healthy children were enrolled. The distribution of genotypes, allelic frequencies, and haplotype frequencies among...

Senate panel approves 2% bump for NIH budget in 2024
To the relief of biomedical research advocates, a Senate spending panel has approved a modest budget increase of 2% for the National Institutes of Health (NIH). The bump to $47.8 billion roughly matches President Joe Biden’s request for the 2024 fiscal year that begins this fall. Although below the rate of biomedical inflation, it is far more generous than a corresponding House of Representatives bill that would slash NIH’s budget by 6% . Advocacy groups welcomed the measure approved on 27 July by the Senate appropriations committee. “The Committee laid down an important marker for the appropriations...

In a move that has more symbolic than practical impact, the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) has imposed new sanctions on a Chinese lab at the center of the debate about the origin of the COVID-19 pandemic. A nine-page HHS memo made public by a House subcommittee that ’s investigating the pandemic ’s origin suspends and proposes debarment of the Wuhan Institute of Virology (WIV) “from participating in United States Federal Government procurement and nonprocurement programs.” In effect, this bars WIV from receiving U.S. government funding now and possibly ever. The ...
