How to prove neglect in the context of the post-mortem examination
In this study, we evaluated 46 autopsied cases where there was clear evidence of physical neglect during the last period of the deceased ’s life. The age of the deceased ranged from 21 to 96 years; most of them were female (71.7%). The majority of cases (89.9%) took place in a domestic environment, with partners or relatives providing care. The most frequent post-mortem findings were pressure sores, followed by inflammatory skin ch anges, and signs of malnutrition and dehydration. Neglect was the cause or co-cause of death in 23% of the cases. More than half of the deceased showed severe contamination of the skin surface...

The effects of human and rhesus macaque blood meal sources on mosquito reproduction and adult survival under laboratory conditions
Exp Parasitol. 2023 Aug 7:108591. doi: 10.1016/j.exppara.2023.108591. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTMass rearing of mosquitoes as required to fulfil research studies is a technically challenging endeavor. Blood meal source has been recognized as a key consideration in mass rearing of mosquitoes that affects colony health and fecundity. Four species of laboratory-colonized mosquitoes from the Department of Entomology, US Army Medical Directorate - Armed Forces Research Institute of Medical Sciences (USAMD-AFRIMS); Anopheles cracens, An. dirus, An. minimus and An. sawadwongporni were fed blood meals from human and rhesus mac...

A global perspective of forensic entomology case reports from 1935 to 2022
In this study, we retrospectively summarized information derived from 307 forensic entomology case reports from 1935 to 2022 from a global perspective. Our checklist of relevant information included insect species, specific indoor or outdoor preferences, preferred temperatures, and stages of body decomposition. Finally, a concept and calculation method for postmortem interval (PMI) estimation accuracy was proposed. There were 232 cases using insect developmental data and 28 cases using succession patterns to estimate PMI. A total of 146 species of insects were involved in the cases, of which 62.3% were Diptera and 37.7% we...

New developmental data of Chrysomya megacephala (Diptera: Calliphoridae) in tropical temperatures and its implications in forensic entomology
Trop Biomed. 2023 Mar 1;40(1):1-6. doi: 10.47665/tb.40.1.003.ABSTRACTThe estimation of the postmortem interval (PMI) is an essential information in death investigations. It is necessary to know the developmental data of the most important necrophagous insect species in every geographical area. Chrysomya megacephala (Fabricius, 1794) (Diptera: Calliphoridae) is one of the most common species associated with human body decomposition, especially in the tropics, so a precise knowledge of its life cycle is crucial. However, despite its ubiquity, developmental data in a range of tropical temperatures is scarce. For this reason, ...
