Subtract Before You Add: Toward the Development of a De-Implementation Approach in School-Based Speech Sound Therapy
CONCLUSIONS: De-implementation will take work and may lead to some difficult discussions. Implementing a framework, such as SHARE, can guide SLPs toward a reduction in workloads and improved outcomes for children with SSDs.PMID:37668554 | DOI:10.1044/2023_LSHSS-22-00176

A scoping review of oral language and social communication abilities in children with Tourette syndrome
CONCLUSIONS: Oral language and social communication skills are important for academic and social success. This review brings scattered literature together to provide up-to-date information about language in children with TS and highlights that there are considerable gaps in our knowledge about language and communication in this population. This scoping review can inform future research and support speech language pathologists in the assessment of young people with TS.WHAT THIS PAPER ADDS: What is already known on the subject Speech-language pathologists (SLPs) working in various contexts (e.g., schools, mental health teams...

Dysphonia Outperforms Voice Change as a Clinical Predictor of Dysphagia
CONCLUSION: These results indicate that voice change during a sustained /i/ after swallowing appears unrelated to airway invasion or pharyngeal residue; however, in the absence of known laryngeal pathology, dysphonia prior to a CSE should alert speech-language pathologists of a possible comorbid dysphagia.PMID:37669615 | DOI:10.1044/2023_AJSLP-23-00018

Motor Performance During Sensorimotor Training for Airway Protection in Parkinson's Disease
CONCLUSIONS: Individuals with PD improved the strength and variability of cough peak flow during cough skill training. These findings provide a clinically relevant characterization of motor performance during cough skill training and lend insight into potential correlates to guide future treatment paradigms.PMID:37668552 | DOI:10.1044/2023_AJSLP-23-00055

The Introduction of a Protocol for Esophageal Screening in Videofluoroscopic Swallowing Studies: Exploring Clinical Impacts and Barriers
CONCLUSIONS: This study confirms that routine esophageal screening provides additional clinical information to assist holistic dysphagia management without adverse operational impacts. Further research with the multidisciplinary dysphagia team has commenced to continue to optimize and refine esophageal screening practice.PMID:37668538 | DOI:10.1044/2023_AJSLP-23-00022

Hyolaryngeal Movement During Normal and Effortful Swallows Determined During Ultrasonography
CONCLUSIONS: The findings show that varying instructions of the effortful swallow affect hyolaryngeal movement differently, suggesting that clinicians may need to individualize the effortful swallow instruction according to the physiological impairments of each patient. Additionally, natural age-related changes in swallowing physiology do not seem to affect an individual's ability to perform the effortful swallow or to impact hyolaryngeal movement. Finally, the association between tongue pressure and hyolaryngeal movement during normal swallows and the effortful swallow with tongue emphasis suggests that the tongue plays a...

Interprofessional Practice Between Speech-Language Pathologists and Classroom Teachers: A Mixed-Methods Systematic Review
CONCLUSIONS: IPP between SLPs and CTs is complex, with various facilitators and barriers to IPP emerging within the education context. Competencies for SLPs and CTs related to having a shared understanding, adequate communication, and building relationships with each other help support IPP in schools. The utilization of a relationship-centered care approach between SLPs and CTs is also important to foster and support student outcomes.SUPPLEMENTAL MATERIAL: https://doi.org/10.23641/asha.24018732.PMID:37668590 | DOI:10.1044/2023_LSHSS-22-00168
