Patient-Reported Outcome Measures for Hearing Aid Benefit and Satisfaction: Content Validity and Readability
CONCLUSIONS: The categories covered by hearing aid PROMs vary considerably, with no single instrument comprehensively covering all the key ICF components. Future development of hearing aid outcome measures should consider a mixed methodology approach for improved content validity and ensure an appropriate reading level.PMID:37708535 | DOI:10.1044/2023_JSLHR-22-00535

Children With Developmental Language Disorder Have Lower Quality of Life Than Children With Typical Development and Children With Cochlear Implants
CONCLUSION: DLD is associated with the children's overall QOL, and the degree of reduced QOL relates to the severity of the language impairment.PMID:37708514 | DOI:10.1044/2023_JSLHR-22-00742

Speech-Language Pathologists' Preparation, Practices, and Perspectives on Serving Indigenous Families and Children
CONCLUSIONS: Very few respondents had training on serving Indigenous children and families, yet they had overall awareness of educational disparities experienced by this group. Respondents reported challenges with developing relationships and overcoming access barriers. Their clinical practices were not as tailored to the language and learning needs of Indigenous children, especially when compared to practices recommended in two recent scoping reviews. The Indigenous Connectedness Framework, the abundance model, and Indigenous pedagogies are presented as ways to initiate change and meaningful engagement with Indigenous fam...

Clinical Practice in Childhood Dysarthria: An Online Survey of German-Speaking Speech-Language Pathologists
CONCLUSIONS: German-speaking SLPs working with children with neurological conditions use various assessment and treatment methods to support children's communication. However, dysarthria-specific approaches were not an established part of clinical practice. Results of the survey highlight the need for access to relevant developments in German and for evaluation of current curricula for speech-language pathology students and continuing education opportunities for practicing clinicians.PMID:37707370 | DOI:10.1044/2023_AJSLP-23-00076

A Know-Brainer: The Power of Cadaver-Based Instruction to Teach Clinical Neuroanatomy
CONCLUSIONS: Cadaver-based instruction was more effective in improving students' ability to identify neuroanatomy compared to lecture for CSD students. Interestingly, cadaver-based demonstrations were also most effective in bolstering students' retention of structural knowledge when conducted before, instead of after, a lecture. Clinical training programs, specifically student learning outcomes, benefit from cadaver-based instruction that provides both three-dimensional orientation and a deep appreciation of the human elements of clinical anatomy. Furthermore, both the acquisition and retention of anatomical concepts may b...

A Mixed-Methods Analysis of Speech-Language Pathologists' Executive Function Services
CONCLUSIONS: Speech-language pathology graduate programs and providers of professional development should be mindful of their role in preparing SLPs to address EF needs, while SLPs may use these results to inform their own practice. Further guidance and research are necessary to elucidate the SLPs' role in mitigating the negative impact of EF challenges on students' education.SUPPLEMENTAL MATERIAL: https://doi.org/10.23641/asha.24101241.PMID:37707364 | DOI:10.1044/2023_AJSLP-22-00238

Implementation Science in School-Based, Universal-Level Intervention Research: A Scoping Review
CONCLUSIONS: Early engagement with stakeholders in education is recommended when designing universal level speech, language, and communication interventions for use in the ordinary classroom. Adaptive, hybrid designs that test both implementation strategies and effectiveness of interventions may be warranted given the influence of inner setting factors on implementation outcomes.PMID:37707419 | DOI:10.1044/2023_LSHSS-22-00181

The Influence of Hearing Loss on the Pupil Response to Degraded Speech
CONCLUSIONS: Hearing loss is associated with a smaller pupil response and steeper decline in baseline pupil size during the perception of degraded speech. This suggests difficulties of the HH participants to sustain their effort investment and performance across the test session.PMID:37699194 | DOI:10.1044/2023_JSLHR-23-00093

Speech-Language Pathologists' Perceptions of Language and Literacy Instruction for Pre-K Children With Developmental Language Disorder
CONCLUSIONS: SLPs identified several instructional practices inclusive pre-K teachers could be taught to use during professional development programs to support the emergent literacy development of children with DLD. They also discussed the need for ongoing collaboration between SLPs, caregivers, and teachers to maximize children's early language and literacy experiences. Future research should explore the impact of partnerships with caregivers and teachers on children's language and literacy outcomes.PMID:37699196 | DOI:10.1044/2023_LSHSS-23-00002

Continua of Support: A New Direction in the Identity-First/People-First Language Debate
Am J Speech Lang Pathol. 2023 Sep 12:1-3. doi: 10.1044/2023_AJSLP-23-00147. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTThis letter expresses the opinion that identity-first language and perspectives in care are essential. It argues that all individuals' support needs should be conceptualized along continua. One such continua is support for communication. It suggests that decisions to receive supports should be left to the individual and, when necessary, invested others who can share potential benefits and costs of support/no-support decisions. Dialogue on this important issue is recommended.PMID:37699168 | DOI:10.1044/2023_AJSLP-23-00147

Word Repetition Paired With Startling Stimuli Decreases Aphasia and Apraxia Severity in Severe-to-Moderate Stroke: A Stratified, Single-Blind, Randomized, Phase 1 Clinical Trial
CONCLUSIONS: This study is the first to evaluate the impact of training with startling acoustic stimuli on clinical measures of aphasia and AOS. Our findings suggest START can enhance both nontrained speech production and receptive speech tasks in moderate/severe aphasia, possibly by reducing poststroke cortical inhibition. Our findings should be considered carefully, as our limitations include small effect sizes, within-group variability, and low completion rates for quality-of-life assessments and follow-up visits. Future studies should explore a mechanism of action, conduct larger and longer Phase 2 clinical trials, and...
