Reliability and Validity of the Avoidance of Daily Activities Photo Scale for Patients with Shoulder Pain (ADAP Shoulder Scale)
CONCLUSIONS: The ADAP Shoulder Scale is a reliable, valid instrument for assessing avoidance behavior in adults who have chronic shoulder pain and are not athletes.IMPACT: This study provides evidence that the ADAP Shoulder Scale is appropriate for clinical and practical use in people with chronic shoulder pain.PMID:37690060 | DOI:10.1093/ptj/pzad101

Critical physiotherapy: a ten-year retrospective
Physiother Theory Pract. 2023 Sep 9:1-13. doi: 10.1080/09593985.2023.2252524. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTCritical physiotherapy has been a rapidly expanding field over the last decade and could now justifiably be called a professional sub-discipline. In this paper we define three different but somewhat interconnected critical positions that have emerged over the last decade that share a critique of physiotherapy's historical approach to health and illness, while also diverging in the possibilities for new forms of practice and thinking. These three positions broadly align with three distinctive philosophies: approaches ...

Clinical research progress in Traditional Chinese Medicine in treating wound healing after anal fistula surgery
J Tradit Chin Med. 2023 Oct;43(5):1047-1054. doi: 10.19852/j.cnki.jtcm.20230630.002.ABSTRACTIn the study of the mechanism of wound healing after anal fistula surgery, how to scientifically and efficiently promote wound healing is of great significance. At present, modern medical treatment of wounds after anal fistula surgery mostly focuses on physical therapy intervention, new wound dressing and packing, and external application of growth factors. However, these therapies have many problems, and there is still no consensus on their clinical use. Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) has several methods to promote wound healin...

Football players with hip dysplasia: The relationship between muscle strength, functional performance, self-reported sport and recreation, cartilage defects and sex. A cross-sectional study
J Orthop Sports Phys Ther. 2023 Sep 8:1-24. doi: 10.2519/jospt.2023.12026. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTOBJECTIVE: In symptomatic football players with hip dysplasia, we aimed to explore the relationships between self-reported sport and recreation ability and (i) hip muscle strength, (ii) functional performance, and investigate if these relationships were modified by sex or cartilage defects. METHODS: In this cross-sectional study, (n=50) football players with longstanding (>6 months) hip and/or groin pain, a positive flexion/adduction/internal rotation (FADIR) test and a lateral-centre-edge angle <250 were included...

Effectiveness of exercise interventions for preventing neck pain: A systematic review with meta-analysis of randomized controlled trials
CONCLUSION: There was moderate certainty evidence supporting exercise interventions for reducing the risk for an episode of neck pain in the next 12 months. The clinical significance of the effect is unclear.PMID:37683100 | DOI:10.2519/jospt.2023.12063

Drawing a "Perfect Circle": How Clinicians Can Become Better Communicators
J Orthop Sports Phys Ther. 2023 Sep 8:1-22. doi: 10.2519/jospt.2023.11917. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTSYNOPSIS: Despite the importance of communication in person-focused care, biomedical knowledge and technical skill development are often prioritized in physical therapy education. As clinicians and educators, we contend that mindfulness and reflection nurture effective communication approaches and support physical therapists in navigating the complexity and uncertainty that comprise most clinical interactions. We suggest that clinicians be mindful of the self, the patient, and the context when interacting with patients....

Lower Quadrant Edema Patient-Reported Outcome Measure Is Reliable, Valid, and Efficient for Patients with Lymphatic and Venous Disorders
CONCLUSION: Scores on the LQE PROM were reliable, valid, and efficient for assessing perceived physical function of patients with lower quadrant edema. The LQE CAT and SF are suitable for research and routine clinical care. Reasons for the small effect size for change scores should be studied.IMPACT: The newly developed LQE PROM was reliable and valid and offers efficient administration modes for assessing perceived physical function of patients with LQE, both for research and routine clinical care in busy outpatient rehabilitation settings. As an item response theory-based measure, the LQE PROM allows administration of co...

Accuracy of Video-Based Gait Analysis Using Pose Estimation during Treadmill Walking Versus Overground Walking in Persons after Stroke
CONCLUSIONS: Video-based gait analysis using pose estimation provides accurate measurements of step length, step time, and hip and knee kinematics during overground and treadmill walking in persons after stroke. Generally, sagittal videos of overground gait provide the most accurate results.IMPACT: Many clinicians lack access to expensive gait analysis tools that can help identify patient-specific gait deviations and guide therapy decisions. These findings show that video-based methods that require only common household devices provide accurate measurements of a variety of gait parameters in persons after stroke and could ...
