Identifying clusters of coexisting conditions and outcomes among adults admitted to hospital with community-acquired pneumonia: a multicentre cohort study
We described differences in medications, imaging and outcomes.RESULTS: Patients clustered into 7 subgroups. The low comorbidity subgroup (n = 3052, 27.5%) had no comorbidities. The DM-HF-Pulm subgroup had prevalent diabetes, heart failure and chronic lung disease (n = 1710, 15.4%). One disease category defined each remaining subgroup, as follows: pulmonary (n = 1621, 14.6%), diabetes (n = 1281, 11.6%), heart failure (n = 1370, 12.4%), dementia (n = 1038, 9.4%) and cancer (n = 1013, 9.1%). Corticosteroid use ranged from 11.5% to 64.9% in the dementia and pulmonary subgroups, respectively. Piperacillin-tazobactam use ranged ...

Platelet-rich plasma versus corticosteroid: a randomized controlled trial on tennis elbow patients resistant to nonsurgical treatments
CONCLUSION: In conclusion, larger studies with parallel groups and more diverse CS doses and types with baseline matching are needed to confirm the short-term benefits of PRP. Investigating the effects of different CS doses using ultrasound techniques is recommended.PMID:37663722 | PMC:PMC10473312 | DOI:10.1097/MS9.0000000000001115

Proof of concept of intracochlear drug administration by laser-assisted bioprinting in mice
Hear Res. 2023 Aug 29;438:108880. doi: 10.1016/j.heares.2023.108880. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTTranstympanic administration is used clinically for the injection of gentamicin and/or corticosteroids. This atraumatic route is based on passive diffusion through the round window membrane (RWM). The main limitation of this method is related to the clearance through the Eustachian tube, making the concentration of the therapeutic agent at the intracochlear level uncertain and limited. Moreover, this technique remains unsuitable for molecules of high molecular weight or in the case of gene therapies. The purpose was to study ...

Adherence to 5-aminosalicylic acid maintenance treatment in young people with ulcerative colitis: a retrospective cohort study in primary care
CONCLUSION: The first year of starting long-term therapies in adolescents and young adults diagnosed with UC is a critical window for active follow-up of maintenance treatment, particularly in those aged 18-24 years and those living in deprived postcodes.PMID:37666511 | DOI:10.3399/BJGP.2023.0006

The utility of H2 receptor antagonists in preventing infusion-related reactions to paclitaxel chemotherapy
CONCLUSIONS: The removal of H2RAs from premedication for paclitaxel did not result in an increased incidence of IRRs. The use of H2RAs in preventing IRRs to paclitaxel should be re-evaluated.PMID:37665180 | DOI:10.1002/cncr.35006

PEG hydrogel containing dexamethasone-conjugated hyaluronic acid reduces secondary injury and improves motor function in a rat moderate TBI model
In this study, we evaluated the effect of locally applied PEG-bis-AA/HA-DXM hydrogel on secondary injury and motor function recovery after moderate controlled cortical impact (CCI) TBI. Hydrogel treatment significantly improved motor function evaluated by beam walk and rotarod tests compared to untreated rats over 7 days post-injury (DPI). We also observed that the hydrogel treatment reduced lesion volume, inflammatory response, astrogliosis, apoptosis, and increased neuronal survival compared to untreated rats at 7 DPI. These results suggest that PEG-bis-AA/HA-DXM hydrogels can mitigate secondary injury and promote motor ...
