The BEST Conceivable Way to Talk About Epilepsy Biomarkers
Epilepsy Curr. 2023 Mar 30;23(3):175-178. doi: 10.1177/15357597231159714. eCollection 2023 May-Jun.ABSTRACTThe search for valid biomarkers to aid in epilepsy diagnosis and management is a major goal of the Epilepsy Research Benchmarks. Many papers and grants answer this call by searching for new biomarkers from a wide range of disciplines. However, the academic use of the word "biomarker" is often imprecise. Without proper definition, such work is not well-prepared to progress to the next step of translating these biomarkers into clinical use. In 2016, the Food and Drug Administration and National Institutes of Health coll...

Optimizing the Immunogenicity of HIV Vaccines by Adjuvants - NIAID Workshop Report
This report summarizes the highlights of a workshop convened by the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases (NIAID), National Institutes of Health (NIH), on April 4-5, 2022, to provide a discussion forum for sharing insights on the current status, key challenges, and next steps to advance the current landscape of promising adjuvants in preclinical and clinical human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) vaccine studies. A key goal was to solicit and share recommendations on scientific, regulatory, and operational guidelines for bridging the gaps in rational selection, access, and formulation of clinically relevant adj...

The NIH Science of Behavior Change Program: Looking Toward the Future
We describe the ways in which SOBC can be applied across a range of domains and contexts, and end by considering ways to extend SOBC's perspective and reach, so as to best promote behavior change linked with health, quality of life, and well-being.PMID:37330260 | DOI:10.1016/j.beth.2023.03.006

Do Brief Lab-Based Interventions Decrease Coercive Conflict Within Couples and Parent-Child Dyads?
Behav Ther. 2023 Jul;54(4):666-681. doi: 10.1016/j.beth.2023.01.006. Epub 2023 Feb 2.ABSTRACTCoercive conflicts between parents and children and between couples are implicated in the pathogenesis of a variety of psychological and physical health problems. Despite its seeming importance to population health, there are no widely available, easy-to-use methods with demonstrated efficacy to engage coercive conflict and reduce it. Identifying and testing potentially efficacious and disseminable micro-interventions (i.e., interventions that can be delivered in under 15 minutes via computer or paraprofessional) for targets with c...

An Experimental Therapeutics Focus on Novel Mechanistic Targets in Cognitive Behavioral Treatments: Introduction to the Special Section
This article introduces the special section, "An Experimental Therapeutics Focus on Novel Mechanistic Targets in Cognitive Behavioral Treatments." The purpose of this special section is to highlight research that follows the recommended Science of Behavior Change (SOBC) developmental progression for an experimental medicine approach to identifying and testing mechanisms of behavior change. Emphasis was placed on the earlier stage "pipeline" of investigations of novel mechanisms for behavior change: mechanisms that are undergoing the initial stages of validation. In this series, seven empirical articles are presented and ar...

IJERPH, Vol. 20, Pages 6156: A Forty-Year Analysis of the Literature on Babesia Infection (1982 & ndash;2022): A Systematic Bibliometric Approach
This study was designed to uncover trends in relation to publication growth and further explore research output regarding babesiosis from data indexed in the WoS. The WoS is the only platform used to map publications on Babesia infection. The search term “babesiosis” or “Babesia infection” was used to extract articles published across the study period from 1982 to 2022. The inclusion criteria were restricted to only articles for the analysis. The results from the search query showed that a total of 3763 articles were published during the study period with an average o...

Blood viscosity associated with stroke mechanism and early neurological deterioration in middle cerebral artery atherosclerosis
Sci Rep. 2023 Jun 9;13(1):9384. doi: 10.1038/s41598-023-36633-z.ABSTRACTBlood viscosity may affect the mechanisms of stroke and early neurological deterioration (END). We aimed to investigate the relationship between blood viscosity, stroke mechanisms, and END in patients with middle cerebral artery (MCA) infarction. Patients with symptomatic MCA atherosclerosis (≥ 50% stenosis) were recruited. Blood viscosity was compared across patients with different mechanisms of symptomatic MCA disease: in situ thrombo-occlusion (sMCA-IST), artery-to-artery embolism (sMCA-AAE), and local branch occlusion (sMCA-LBO). END was defined ...

NLM ’s LitVar 2.0 Provides More Accurate & Comprehensive Way to Search for Genetic Variants in Biomedical Literature
A team of researchers from the National Library of Medicine (NLM) at the National Institutes of Health (NIH) and the Broad Institute developed an improved web-based system, LitVar 2.0, to help researchers and clinicians search for genetic variants and related information in the biomedical literature. A paper about this powerful LitVar 2.0 system was published in Nature Genetics.

Eye-tracking in adult depression: protocol for a systematic review and meta-analysis
Introduction In recent years, eye-tracking has been proposed as a promising tool to identify potential biomarkers for mental disorders, including major depression. We will conduct an updated systematic review and meta-analysis on eye-tracking research in adults with major depressive disorder or other clinically diagnosed depressive disorders. Methods and analysis This protocol follows all reporting items in the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses Protocol extension. We will conduct a systematic search of PubMed, PsycINFO, Google Scholar and EMBASE for sources published up until March 2023. A...

The improving Medication Adherence in Adolescents and young adults following Liver Transplantation (iMALT) multisite trial: Design and trial implementation considerations
DISCUSSION: Improving Medication Adherence in adolescent Liver Transplant includes several innovative design elements. The use of a validated, objective adherence index to survey a large cohort of transplant recipients allows the teams to avoid bias inherent in both convenience sampling and referral-based recruitment and enroll only patients whose computed index indicates substantially increased risk of rejection. The remote intervention paradigm helps to engage patients who are by definition hard to engage. The use of an objective, masked medical (rather than behavioral) outcome measure reduces the likelihood of biases re...
