Machine-learning assisted multicolor platform for multiplex detection of antibiotics in environmental water samples
Talanta. 2023 Sep 4;267:125153. doi: 10.1016/j.talanta.2023.125153. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTAntibiotic (AB) resistance is one of daunting challenges of our time, attributed to overuse of ABs and usage of AB-contaminated food resources. Due to their detrimental impact on human health, development of visual detection methods for multiplex sensing of ABs is a top priority. In present study, a colorimetric sensor array consisting of two types of gold nanoparticles (AuNPs) were designed for identification and determination of ABs. Design principle of the probe was based on aggregation of AuNPs in the presence of ABs at di...

Multi-antibiotics removal under UV-A light using sol-gel prepared TiO < sub > 2 < /sub > : Central composite design, effect of persulfate addition and degradation pathway study
Chemosphere. 2023 Sep 1:140025. doi: 10.1016/j.chemosphere.2023.140025. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTThe removal of three antibiotics i.e., metronidazole (MNZ), ciprofloxacin (CIP) and tetracycline (TET), from aqueous system via TiO2 photocatalysis under UV-A light was investigated. Photocatalyst(s) were prepared using sol-gel method under different calcination temperatures (400-800 °C) and water-alcohol ratio. The spherical shaped catalyst (mean particle size ∼ 61 nm) was characterized via FTIR, XRD, BET, SEM, Raman, XPS, UV-DRS, and Fluorometry, and point of zero charge was also determined (pHPZC ∼ 6.6). Batch phot...

Multifunctional Ni(OH) < sub > 2 < /sub > /Ag composites for ultrasensitive SERS detection and efficient photocatalytic degradation of ciprofloxacin and methylene blue
In this study, we employed a simple and rapid in-situ deposition method to coat Ag nanoparticles onto flower-like Ni(OH)2 spheres, resulting in the formation of Ni(OH)2/Ag composites with excellent photocatalytic performance and SERS activity. These composites were used as a promising SERS analysis tool for effective detection of organic pollutants, including ciprofloxacin hydrochloride (CIP) and methylene blue (MB). Notably, the composites exhibited outstanding detection limits of 10-8 M for MB and 10-7 M for CIP, respectively, and showed a strong linear relationship between SERS intensities and the logarithmic concentrat...

Dissemination of ESBL-producing E. coli ST131 through wastewater and environmental water in Switzerland
This study demonstrates that the clinically relevant E. coli lineage ST131 pollutes river ecosystems, representing a significant challenge to public health and to technologies to minimize their entry into the water environment.PMID:37659628 | DOI:10.1016/j.envpol.2023.122476

Transferable mechanisms of quinolone resistance are more frequent among enterotoxigenic Escherichia coli isolates displaying low-level quinolone resistance
This study analysed the mechanisms of quinolone resistance among enterotoxigenic Escherichia coli (ETEC) in a periurban area of Lima, Peru. The susceptibility to nalidixic acid and ciprofloxacin, the role of Phe-Arg-b-Naphtylamyde inhibitable-(PAbN) efflux pumps, the presence of mutations in gyrA and parC as well as the presence of aac(6')Ib-cr, qepA, qnrA, qnrB, qnrC, qnrD, qnrVC and oqxAB were determined in 31 ETEC from previous case/control studies of children's diarrhoea. Discordances between disk diffusion, with all isolates showing intermediate or fully resistance to nalidixic acid, and minimal inhibitory concentrati...

Adsorption-desorption behaviors of ciprofloxacin onto aged polystyrene fragments in aquatic environments
This study gives a comprehensive understanding of the adsorption-desorption behaviors of antibiotics onto MPs at a molecular level and indicates that MPs could act as Trojan horses to transport antibiotics into aquatic organisms.PMID:37652241 | DOI:10.1016/j.chemosphere.2023.139995
