Adherence to vaccination guidelines of patients with complete splenectomy in Norway, 2008-2020
This study assessed vaccination coverage (VC) among Norwegian patients with surgical asplenia. Using the Nomesco Classification of Surgical Procedures codes, patient information (age, sex, date of initial diagnosis and date of surgery) was acquired from the Norwegian Patient Registry. The National Immunization Register provided information on vaccination status and data of any subsequent invasive bacterial infections were obtained from the Norwegian Surveillance System for Communicable Diseases. From the total population of Norway, 3155 patients who had undergone complete splenectomy were identified. Of these, 914 (29.0%) ...

Long-term efficacy and safety profile of splenectomy for pediatric chronic immune thrombocytopenia
Int J Hematol. 2023 Jan 9. doi: 10.1007/s12185-022-03529-z. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTThere are few reports of the long-term efficacy of splenectomy in children with immune thrombocytopenia (ITP). In a 33-year period, we performed splenectomies in 23 pediatric patients with ITP at a single institution in Japan. The age at surgery was 5-22 years with a median of 10 years. The follow-up period was 1-141 months with a median of 48 months. Before surgery, we confirmed the presence or absence of the accessory spleen by contrast-enhanced CT scan and we recommended vaccination with pneumococcal vaccine. Four patients underwen...

Pneumococcal vaccine coverage in Japan among patients with a history of splenectomy: Results of a retrospective administrative database study
CONCLUSION: This was the first study to document PPSV23 vaccination coverage after splenectomy in a Japanese real-world setting. PPSV23 coverage is quite low in Japan relative to that in other countries.PMID:33865627 | DOI:10.1016/j.vaccine.2021.03.045

B Cell Reconstitution and Influencing Factors After Hematopoietic Stem Cell Transplantation in Children
Nicolaas G. van der Maas, Dagmar Berghuis, Mirjam van der Burg and Arjan C. Lankester* Willem-Alexander Children's Hospital, Department of Pediatrics and Laboratory for Pediatric Immunology, Leiden University Medical Center, Leiden, Netherlands B cell reconstitution after hematopoietic stem cell transplantation (HSCT) is variable and influenced by different patient, donor, and treatment related factors. In this review we describe B cell reconstitution after pediatric allogeneic HST, including the kinetics of reconstitution of the different B cell subsets and the development of the B cell repertoire, and d...

Common variable immunodeficiency, immune thrombocytopenia, rituximab and splenectomy: important considerations.
We present the case of a 44-year-old postpartum female who presented with nausea, vomiting and abdominal distension. Four years prior, she was hospitalized for treatment of immune thrombocytopenia (ITP) with splenectomy and rituximab followed by two episodes of bacterial meningitis despite immunizations. The recurrent meningitis had been attributed to splenectomy and immunotherapy. During this hospitalization, extensive workup for gastrointestinal pathology was negative and she was diagnosed with intestinal pseudo-obstruction. Her hospital course was complicated by development of severe pseudomonas pneumonia, and subsequen...
