Dr. David Brownstein fought Shingrix, and Shingrix won
Dr. David Brownstein is a "holistic" family practice physician in my area. Consistent with being "holistic," he is antivaccine to the core. That's why he's unhappy with the recent CDC recommendation that adults over 50 receive the new shingles vaccine. He thinks he's found a clever argument to show it doesn't work. Unfortunately, his argument only reveals his bias and misunderstanding. The post Dr. David Brownstein fought Shingrix, and Shingrix won appeared first on RESPECTFUL INSOLENCE.

An Infection that Vaccine Doesn't Prevent over Time
BY NATALIE CAZEAU, MSC; ERICA ROMAN HERNANDEZ; KINZA IJAZ; AMY SCHEUERMANN; AHMED RAZIUDDIN, MDA 43-year-old man presented to the ED with a rash in a C7 dermatomal pattern that was burning and painful. The patient said the rash began three weeks before the ED visit as a group of little blisters on his right upper back and extending down his right arm. The patient was worried and in mild distress as the rash continued to burn, and he reported numbness to the area. He mentioned he had received the shingles vaccine in the past. The patient's rash was yellow, crusty, and tender upon palpation. The area was hyperke...

SOCS and Herpesviruses, With Emphasis on Cytomegalovirus Retinitis
Christine I. Alston1,2 and Richard D. Dix1,2* 1Department of Biology, Viral Immunology Center, Georgia State University, Atlanta, GA, United States 2Department of Ophthalmology, Emory University School of Medicine, Atlanta, GA, United States Suppressor of cytokine signaling (SOCS) proteins provide selective negative feedback to prevent pathogeneses caused by overstimulation of the immune system. Of the eight known SOCS proteins, SOCS1 and SOCS3 are the best studied, and systemic deletion of either gene causes early lethality in mice. Many viruses, including herpesviruses such as herpes simplex virus and cytomega...

Seropositivity, Risks, and Morbidity From Varicella-Zoster Virus Infections in an Adult PWH Cohort From 2000-2020
CONCLUSIONS: Despite ART and vaccines for chickenpox and shingles, VZV still caused significant costs and morbidity for PWH, occurring at younger ages and often as encephalitis/meningitis. Supporting ART adherence may reduce VZV illness and hospitalization costs in PWH, and the cost-effectiveness of expanding shingles vaccine use warrants further study.PMID:36004318 | PMC:PMC9394766 | DOI:10.1093/ofid/ofac395

The Association between Varicella Vaccination and Herpes Zoster in Children: A Semi-National Retrospective Study
J Clin Med. 2023 Jun 27;12(13):4294. doi: 10.3390/jcm12134294.ABSTRACTVaricella vaccination in children has been performed worldwide in recent years. Despite established effectiveness, many countries still do not routinely vaccinate children against varicella, probably due to concerns about complications, such as herpes zoster infection. We aimed to compare the herpes zoster incidence in children before and after implementing the mandatory varicella vaccine in Israel in 2008. As a secondary aim, we characterized several parameters, including age, sex, and ethnic sector among herpes zoster cases, and we evaluated the compli...

Vaccine anxiety… A teachable moment for doctors?
I’ve read and re-read Dr. Paul Offit’s WSJ opinion piece, The Anti-Vaccination Epidemic. Dr. Offit is a professor of Pediatrics at a leading hospital in the United States. He is also an author, a scientist, and a vaccine-developer. In short, he is a major physician leader. I’ll come back to that point in just a second. His piece addresses the problem of pediatric infectious disease in the United States. Context is important here. Data from the CDC show that infectious disease is not in the top-five causes of death in children. In the US, children older than one are ten times more likely die from unin...

Surveillance of Vaccination Coverage Among Adult Populations -United States, 2018
MMWR Surveill Summ. 2021 May 14;70(3):1-26. doi: 10.15585/mmwr.ss7003a1.ABSTRACTPROBLEM/CONDITION: Adults are at risk for illness, hospitalization, disability and, in some cases, death from vaccine-preventable diseases, particularly influenza and pneumococcal disease. CDC recommends vaccinations for adults on the basis of age, health conditions, prior vaccinations, and other considerations. Updated vaccination recommendations from CDC are published annually in the U.S. Adult Immunization Schedule. Despite longstanding recommendations for use of many vaccines, vaccination coverage among U.S. adults remains low.REPORTING PER...
