Assessment of the Morphology and Degenerative Changes in the Temporomandibular Joint Using CBCT according to the Orthodontic Approach: A Scoping Review
CONCLUSIONS: Skeletal and dental class II malocclusion with a retrognathic mandible, a hypodivergent skeletal pattern with a steep mandibular plane, and significant lateral mandibular displacement can be risk factors for developing radiographically detectable degenerative changes. Patients with skeletal and dental class III malocclusion as well as a hyperdivergent skeletal pattern may be at greater risk of TMD occurrence compared with other groups. Further studies are necessary to clarify the relationship between the position of the condylar processes and the presence of degenerative changes in the temporomandibular joints...

Impact of low-dose computed tomography (LDCT) screening on lung cancer-related mortality
CONCLUSIONS: The current evidence supports a reduction in lung cancer-related mortality with the use of LDCT for lung cancer screening in high-risk populations (those over the age of 40 with a significant smoking exposure). However, there are limited data on harms and further trials are required to determine participant selection and optimal frequency and duration of screening, with potential for significant overdiagnosis of lung cancer. Trials are ongoing for lung cancer screening in non-smokers.PMID:35921047 | DOI:10.1002/14651858.CD013829.pub2

Five Radiology Artificial Intelligence Companies That Somebody Should Build and Invest In
By HUGH HARVEY I’ve previously written comprehensively on where to invest in Radiology AI, and how to beat the hype curve precipice the field is entering. For those that haven’t read my previous blog, my one line summary is essentially this: “Choose companies with a narrow focus on clinically valid use cases with large data sets, who are engaged with regulations and haven’t over-hyped themselves …” The problem is… hardly any investment opportunities in Radiology AI like this actually exist, especially in the UK. I thought it’s about time I wrote down my ideas for what I’d actually build (i...

Pharmacological interventions versus placebo, no treatment or usual care for osteoporosis in people with chronic kidney disease stages 3-5D
CONCLUSIONS: Among patients with CKD stages 3-4, anti-osteoporotic drugs may reduce the risk of vertebral fracture in low certainty evidence. Anti-osteoporotic drugs make little or no difference to the risk of clinical fracture and adverse events in moderate certainty evidence. Among patients with CKD stages 5 and 5D, it is uncertain whether anti-osteoporotic drug reduces the risk of clinical fracture and death because the certainty of this evidence is very low. Anti-osteoporotic drug may slightly improve the BMD at the lumbar spine in low certainty evidence. It is uncertain whether anti-osteoporotic drug improves the BMD ...

Interventions for treating cavitated or dentine carious lesions
CONCLUSIONS: Compared with CR, there were lower numbers of failures with HT and SE in the primary dentition, and with SE and SW in the permanent dentition. Most studies showed high risk of bias and limited precision of estimates due to small sample size and typically limited numbers of failures, resulting in assessments of low or very low certainty of evidence for most comparisons.PMID:34280957 | DOI:10.1002/14651858.CD013039.pub2

Interventions for preventing distal intestinal obstruction syndrome (DIOS) in cystic fibrosis
CONCLUSIONS: There is an absence of evidence for interventions for the prevention of DIOS. As there was only one included trial, we could not perform a meta-analysis of the data. Furthermore, the included trial compared a prokinetic agent (cisapride) that is no longer licensed for use in a number of countries due to the risk of serious cardiac events, a finding that came to light after the trial was conducted. Therefore, the limited findings from the trial are not applicable in current clinical practice. Overall, a great deal more research needs to be undertaken on gastrointestinal complications in CF, as this is a very po...

Facial imaging to screen for foetal alcohol spectrum disorder (FASD): A scoping review
CONCLUSION: The use of facial imaging to screen for and diagnose patients with FASD is a rapidly advancing field. Most studies in the field remain exploratory, attempting to find accurate, reliable, and consistent landmarks and measures across different populations. For community screening, none of the tools in this review completely fulfil all the identified properties of an ideal screening tool in their current form. More research and development are needed prior to advocating for any tool listed and the ethical implications are yet to be fully explored.PMID:35616438 | DOI:10.1111/acer.14875

The efficiency of artificial intelligence methods for finding radiographic features in different endodontic treatments - a systematic review
CONCLUSIONS: AI-based models have shown effectiveness in finding radiographic features in different endodontic treatments. While the reported accuracy measurements seem promising, the papers mostly were biased methodologically.PMID:36548872 | DOI:10.1080/00016357.2022.2158929

Association between the prevalence of pulp stones and calcified atherosclerotic plaques: a systematic review and meta-analysis
CONCLUSIONS: Limited evidence suggests that there is a positive association between the prevalence of PS in permanent teeth detected using panoramic radiography and CAP in the coronary or carotid arteries.PMID:37052394 | DOI:10.1259/dmfr.20230004
